Back to the Basics Rally, IL, 2012

Back to the Basics Rally
Hidden Springs State Forest
Strausburg, IL 62465
618-644-3091
April 26-29, 2012

Hidden Springs State Forest is a beautiful little campground that is all but forgotten. Most campers reserve sites at the two State Parks and three Army Corps Campgrounds on Lake Shelbyville leaving Hidden Springs as a quiet, unspoiled gem.

Join us for the Back to the Basics Rally on April 26th. Back to the Basics is a fitting name because Hidden Springs has no hookups and no electricity. There isn't even a shower house, however water and a dump station are available on site.

Don't be scared off because there are no hookups. Airstreams are very well equipped for boondocking. The campground is well shaded and air conditioning should not be necessary in April. Bring your percolator for coffee and get ready to have a good time.

Reservations are accepted, but none are needed. There are 28 sites available and they don't even fill up on a holiday weekend. And you can't beat the cost... $8.

This is a beautiful spot.

We and Steve (TinLoaf) have been at this campground for a long weekend the last two springs. Have kept a fire going each day, cooked outside and just enjoyed the quiet.

We are planning to bring 9,7 & 5 year old grandchildren this time. Plenty of open area for them to run and play in.

Wrote it on the calendar. We will need to leave on Saturday to accomodate Roger's work schedule. With Alumapalooza and taking 2 weeks for Michigan, Sundays off will be in short supply this year.

Steve,

This sounds awesome... However, that weekend doesn't work for me, which I guess means "us." I have a huge annual work commitment that weekend (usually the last weekend in April,) so we'll have to do it another year.

So far our first "scheduled" trip for 2012 is Moraine View in June, but I'm sure we'll do some other things that aren't on our calendar yet.

We are planning on attending this year. Dan has to work Sunday so we will have to leave Saturday night, but it will be worth it.

That's excellent news. Last year we had a rally of two and this year it looks like we're going to have eight. If any of your Good Sam group want to join us that's not a problem either.

A few of us are arriving after work Thursday so coming early and leaving early won't be so bad. I think Roger has to leave early to work too.

Yeaaaay!

We'll be in on Thursday early afternoon.

Such a beautiful spot. Last year we had a fire going the whole weekend, mostly from downed wood that we and Duncan dragged to the campsite.

See you soon,

Magggie

Head out I-70 to Effingham to Hwy 32 North, left on 700 (west), 3.5 miles, campground is on the left. Click the link to see a map.

Only one more weekend until the rally. Do we want to do potlucks both Friday and Saturday evenings or are two potlucks too much?

This is a pretty small group so I don't think we need to do much of a schedule. I hesitate to even call it a rally. It's more of a group campout with lots of time relaxing around a campfire.

Oh, I think it's a rally! It's been just we two the last two years, and this year we actually have a group!

I think we could loosely potluck Friday &.Saturday, everyone just bring a dish to share, do their own meat perhaps.??

We will be in Thursday afternoon with 3 grand kids in tow. Are planning on building a fire and letting them roast hotdogs, do some baked beans, etc. Anyone who wants to join us is welcome.

I could smoke a pork butt for the meat if we wanted to do pulled pork sandwiches.

Thanks for the directions. Have to call it a rally, where more than one Airstream meets, it is a rally? At least sounds good. Potlucks are good for us. We might be up
Thursday, going to depend on our work schedules. We can't wait!!!

Looking forward to seeing you two, again!

Our grand babies are 9, 7 and 5, two boys and a girl, and there are at least 3 other children coming from what Steve tells me. Ours have travelled and camped with us for years, but this is the first time without electricity, running water, etc. Grandpa Doug will introduce the boys to pit toilets, which will fascinate and repulse them a bit, I believe. Ha!

These are sweet, well-behaved and imaginative kids, who will have a blast in this wooded campground where they can rip around with the dogs, play with their light sabers, play hide and seek, etc. We persuaded their parents to let us take them out of school a day, and are looking forward to showing them a different kind of camping. If anyone has grand kids, nieces/nephews they want to snag and bring along, this would be a good weekend to do so.

Going to be fun, and we are looking forward to it.

Since I will likely arrive on Thu and may be the first one there is there any particular area in the campground where everyone is going? Have not made any reservations and hopefully won't be needed.

Hi Al!! Didn't realize you were coming. Will be good to see you.

There is an electric loop, where you come into the park, and the non-electric loop across a little bridge. There is a camp host there, or has been, who can point the way. If not, you'll find it easily. Steve and I always set up at the far end from the bridge. There is a nice fire pit there. Sites are all around that loop.

You won't need reservations, there is plenty of room . We will be there mid afternoon. Kiddies are doing a half day of school that day.

Sorry Al. I know this got your hopes up, but only the host has electric. The rest of the sites in the entire campground are non-electric so you'll be boondocking with the rest of us.
