I don't get home 'till 6:00 on most evenings so by the time I change, grab a quick bite, hook-up and drive through Atlanta traffic, there is no telling what time we'll arrive. I'm guessing somewhere between 8:30 and zzzzzzzzzzz. IIRC, the site we have should be easy to back into in the dark so I'll try not to disturb too many if it is late. I'm kind of getting the hang of backing, but I do a better job during daylight when I don't have to depend on voice directions from the missus so much...I didn't really type that did I?

Any-who, I'm thinking of trying I-75 this time instead of GA-400. Anybody know any short cuts to Helen going this way?

you can cut across near Calhoun. I think you go right by the New Echota Cherokke memorial place, and then follow it to 575.

OR you can get on 575 at the Town Center Mall area.Take it thru Ellijay and Blue Ridge on to Hiawassee. Its flatter and less traffic than 400.

Thanks Alan, I'll have to give that a try.

Alan, you may have answered this already, but what is the drive like coming from the east? Number 2 child goes to school in Dahlonaga and it is usually faster for us to go thru Winder and Gainsville on back roads that it is to go thru downtown when we go up there to visit. The camp isn't too far from Gainseville, but I have no idea what the roads are like from Gainseville up. Any ideas?

Jim

I have gone thru that way, just very curvy & swoopy roads on the way thru towards Helen. Pretty drive though. Did it in my Motorhome, and a few times in cars. It really begs for my 911.

We have gone up through Cleveland to Helen (last August) to the Top-of-Georgia Airstream Park and going up GA-400 wasn't too bad, but we have a 3/4 ton diesel. Your Overlander shouldn't be too much of a burden on a 1/2 ton tow vehicle in those hills. They aren't too steep in most cases. The steepest are probably north of TOG and that isn't too far. Most would be comparable to Delonega I should think.

I'm not sure where I'm coming from ....literally. I'm going to be working in W. SC/NC that week and plan to arrive Friday... early I hope. Julie will drive up from Sumter with the kids Friday as well. I'm staying Sunday night and starting my week just north of camp in Murphy, NC on Monday a.m.
I know this will sound weird but has anyone any idea of the Sprint coverage up there? I hate being without wireless connectivity for my computer.... but wait... all the folks I'm looking to share info with will be right there.... we don't need no stinkin' computers.

We live up hear and Cingular and Verizon are the dominate carriers. Our daughter when she came home from college had Sprint and she never had a great signal strength. I have seen some folk's with the Sprint wireless card for their computer so that may be better served.

Verizon has pretty much dominated the western NC mountains. I have unlimited roaming with my cell phone but my cellular air card is "no roam" so the wifi is a big plus, thanks for the update.
Oh, David... We have a 45 lb. brown alarm clock, her name is Shadow and she will wake us, thanks.
