You folks probably already have it all figured out, but just a bit of road info:

the Wateree exit is mm 41 on I77. That puts it 41 miles north of Columbia(77 begins/ends in Cola)

Unless it is rush hour, the traffic around Cola flows pretty well, there are3-4 lanes each way. The thickest traffic is on the I20 side of Cola.

I20 crosses I77 in Cola at about mm12, so about 29-30 miles on up to the Wateree exit. Very easy travel from Cola to Xit 41.

We are in Cola at our Unit rally as I write this. Came in during the 5:00 rush hour Friday, no problem. You folks are probably already road hardened from dealing with Atlanta traffic, so Cola should be a piece of pie.

Please travel safe, we want to see all your smiling faces on the shores of Lake Wateree.

John

Howdy, Alan. Sue and I prefer less super-highway and more America when we have time. (And far too often it takes a lot more time). So, no, we do not go to Columbia enroute to Lake Wateree State Park.

Interstate routes may be quicker (either taking I-85 east to I-26 south to I-20 east to I-77 north or just I-20 east to I-77 north), but Sue and I prefer a mix.

For example, when we (I) drove there last fall, I took GA-53 from Jasper (home) through Gainesville then worked south (maybe it was US-129) to get to I-85. I took I-85 to SC-8, through Pelzer to Fountain Inn (we've stayed overnight at the Walmart there enroute to Myrtle Beach), then I-385 south to I-26 to Newberry area where I cut off onto SC-34 east through Winnsboro, then cut off the state route onto some little road (Old River Road, aka State Rd S 20-41 to keep an easterly direction) east to US-21 north to River Road (aka State Rd S 20-101) with some sweeping turns to park entrance. (How's that for a run-on sentence?)

By going through Gainesville, we avoid going into Atlanta. By going through Pelzer, we cut across from I-85 north to I-385 south without using the I-185 ring road/connector, or going into Greenville. By going through Winnsboro, we avoid going closer to Columbia.

Most of our route was programmed into our (vocal and somewhat verbose) GPS so as to not miss the little turns. And some of our route makes for interesting (but not dangerous) situations for an crew-cab pickup pulling a 34' trailer.

So good luck. This may be more than you wanted to know, but I thought that I'd share.

Phil

Well hello there Chuck and Karen, we are sure glad to turn that black to silver and have you join the fun. There are quite a few fellow Georgians coming.

Did I mention that all first timers get the honor of skinning the possums?

Our friend Doug

With Maggie's blessing, we will have a very brief celebration of life for Doug Friday evening, before supper.
And, unbeknownst to Maggie, for those who wish, a place to contribute to their designated charity. Also a card to sign. All from their Alumalina pals.

Just want everyone to know.

John

Food for thought...or thoughts for food : just what is it??
If you would like to bring something to the table to share, this may help.

HOT DOGS: No matter how you dress it, it's still just a hotdog.

POSSUM BOG: a big pot of "stew" consisting of possum(don't worry, tastes just like chikken), smoked sausage, pork sausage, rice, celery, carrots, onions, spices, anything else we can catch to throw in the pot.

SAT/SUN BREAKFAST: it's potluck, bring anything you want.

FISH FRY SAT NITE: Fried white fish fillets, shrimp, devil crab, hp, ff.

Make it easy on yourself. Breads, salads, pastas, deserts. Your choice. Its all good.

Some good things to know
There is little to no cell service in the park. Some of the lake fronts sites have a bit. Talk fast, it will likely break off.

We are 10 country miles off the interstate, and at least 18 country miles to any emergency services. Take care to stay safe.

The nearest small town is Great Falls, SC about 12 very country miles away. Nothing much there. A grocery store, Dollar General.

The nearest little bit bigger town is Winnsboro,SC about 18 country miles away. Walmart, big grocery stores, motels, Hospital

Remember to be discrete with any adult beverages.

The park office/tackle shop has some basic supplies, it's best to pack in what you need.

The campground road and sites are paved, the sites mostly level. Some blocking may be necessary to level completely side to side.

We are all on 1 paved loop, so it is very easy to parooze. A walk is fun. Everyone is close to all the fun stuff. It is all either at your front door, back door, or side door. 1 of the 2 bath houses is located in the gathering area.

There is no pavilion so we will be at the mercy of the weather. The tents will work just fine. Please bring one if you can.

The park is dark after sundown. Bring a good flashlight. Tiki torches through out the campground would be a nice touch. Bring a chair.

Each site is 30a, water, has a fire ring and pikka nikka table. Trees. The dump station is located as you leave the CG.

We won't have much 110v power at the tent area, plan accordingly.

Gonna be fun.

John,

Started the organizing this dreary Sunday. Looking for stuff, we been making a list and checking it twice still gonna forget something, it happens. Tried a simple loaf in the DO last night, didn't quite get it cooked correctly but it was a nice night to be at the campfire.

We'll be bringing the big cast iron for Sat breakfast. Cooking something round, flat, good with sweet liquid and pork parts.

I figured we'd have something for Doug, thanks.

Gary

Schedule

We offer this schedule only so we may all be on the same page if something interests you. REMEMBER: nothing is required, except that you enjoy yourself. There is no pavilion, so all group activities will take place at the tents, located in the open area in the center of the campground.

FRIDAY
5:00-6:00 Meet and Greet. Come meet the neighbors, bring a beverage of choice. Be happy but be discreet.

6:00-7:00 Supper on us. Our almost famous possum bog. Bring your dinnerware, drink, and a simple side or desert to share if you wish.

7:00-until A brief salute to Doug. Then, open mic. If you wish, please introduce yourself. Enjoy a great Carolina evening around the campfire.

SATURDAY
8:30-9:30 Breakfast. Please bring your breakfast speciality to share. We will have 2 big coffee pots set up. There will be dutch oven and campfire cooking taking place also.

10:00-12:00 Seminars:
DUTCH OVEN COOKING, tips and techniques. Led by Gary and Jon. Bring your cast iron and join the fun.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR TANKS. a general, open discussion on maintaining your black, wash, and fresh water tanks. Led by yours truly.

TRAILER REPAIRS. If you have a small repair or maintenance item we can help with, just let it be known. Led by Terry.

12:00-1:00 lunch on your own

1:00-4:00 the BEST part:
OPEN HOUSE only if you want to participate. If you do, we have a sign for you to post in a window.
FLEA MARKET/ SWAP-N-SHOP we will have a table set up, or put your stuff outside your trailer, or both. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
BRING-A-BEER, GET-A-BEER for the lovers of those one of a kind micro brewed beers. Probably at the tents.
MEET RITA she will be under the awning at our trailer, site #50. Drop by and introduce yourself.
PAROOZING enjoy the afternoon just hanging out with Airstream Pals

5:00-6:00 the FISH FRY we have premo, restaurant grade fish fillets, shrimp, devil crab, french fries, and hush puppies. We could use slaw, salad, pasta, deserts, anything you want to bring.

6:30 until DOOR PRIZES you do not have to contribute, everyone gets to participate regardless. We have some really good stuff from Airstream, Out of Doors Mart, LED4RV Dan, Camping world, and Highland Haven Airstream Park in Virginia. We may even have a few more. If you would like to contribute some inexpensive trinket, Airstream related or not, store bought or handmade, that would also be great.

More campfire, enjoy another Carolina evening.

SUNDAY
8:30 breakfast. Make it easy. Doughnuts, pastries, etc. We will say goodbye at breakfast.

This is not set in stone, only a suggestion. We want to make sure there is PLENTY of time for socializing, paroozing, just hanging out.

A couple of questions

We have 100 hotdogs for the Thursday nite feast.

Question: did someone say they were bringing buns??
SCtinman is bringing the condoms ...errr....I mean condiments.

We still need confirmation on the number of tents available.

Question: who can bring a 10x10 push up tent?? we are hoping for at least 12.
