Only 7 sites left

A check tonite shows only 7 sites left in the park. They are all good sites, all just a stone's throw from the central gathering point.

BTW, nothing better to season up a new DO than a good ole greasy possum.

Yep, do need something to move coals around with.

We use the grill tongs that came with our set. Works fine.

Setting Out the Traps...

All this talk of Dutch Ovens is really getting me excited about a tasty possum stew done in our new Lodge Dutch Oven. Here is how we catch the critters up North…

John, are all the taken sites with the rally, do you know?

I see SOB's marked on the map.

Some poor folks looking for a quiet weekend may be in for a surprise.

You know, I keep coming back to some of these pictures of delicious looking foods that have been cooked in DO's - I am so impressed!

Awwww....thanks!

Seriously, it isn't as difficult as one might think, and lots of people out there are doing amazing things with Dutch Ovens.

We have the advantage over our ancestors, in that we can use charcoal briquettes rather than coal from a wood fire. Now that was talent.

There is just a learning curve to it, and the process requires more attention than conventional cooking.

Y'all are going to be amazed at the easy, delicious loaves of bread you can turn out. So soul-satisfying.

In honor of the holidays, I think I am going to try a loaf with dried cranberries, grated orange rind and chopped walnuts.

Picture coming in a couple of days.

Maggie,

Not just the ancestors used wood coals for dutch oven cooking. When I was a Boy Scout we performed DO cooking with coals from a wood fire. Of course that's been just a few years ago!

Well, cooking in a DO with coals from a wood fire is not a skill I possess.

Come to the rally and show us how this is done.

I'm afraid Dutch Oven cooking is a talent I lost over the years along with starting a fire by rubbing two sticks together and tying a sheepshank

I look forward to relearning a lost skill.

Chuck,

It'll take a few minutes and a wiff of campfire smoke and all of the BSA days will come back. You'll be cooking up a storm.

Okay, then, Gary.....I'd like to see how this is done!

I have tried using wood fire coals a few times, with disastrous results unless we were simply frying bacon, sausage, etc.

Burnt things to a crisp.

Maggie,

DO's can create burnt offerings and nasty cleanups for sure. I'll be practicing a bit this winter.

Let's have some fun.

And....here it is.

Decidedly rustic-looking, and the cranberries seemed to color the dough a bit.

Grated fresh orange rind, dried cranberries and walnuts.

Could substitute raisins for cranberries, and add some cinnamon.

It is quite delicious, and we declare it a success.
