Alumalina 2013 - Fall Edition

September 20-22

Lake Wateree state Park

881 State Park Road

Winnsboro, SC 29180

803. 482.6401

For those of you who have never been to Lake Wateree SP, you will be

pleased. One of SC's best, it is located on the shores of Lake Wateree. It has paved roads with paved,

mostly level sites, heavily wooded with water/electric and a dump station.

A great park for Kayaks/Canoes, Fishing, Biking and hiking.

72 sites on 1 loop, very popular with boaters and fishermen, often fills on

weekends. Early reservations are highly recommended.

The front leg of the loop has the waterfront sites. They are most nearly

filled. We will have a better chance of parking togetherif we use the back

leg, sites 50-72. All the sites in the park are good, and it is only a short

walk from the farthest points.

You can call directly to the park at 803.482.6401 during regular business

hours to make a reservation, or on line through Reserve America. The rates

are $18-$22+/-.

A map with pictures is available on their web site.

The park is about 8 miles off I77 at SC exit 41. (41 miles south of Charlotte)

There are signs pointing the way, and directions are on their web site.

It has a decent park store but it is a bit isolated down there so pack in what you need.

So....if you were at the March gathering, we hope to see you again in September. If you couldn't make March, here is your chance to join in on the Fall Fling..

We can work out the details as we go. For now, go ahead and mark your calender.

Great park, great people, great time.

John

John
Thanks again John for the coordination and information!

I just called and although I didn't realize it was Saturday, she took my reservation anyway. I've booked site 51, a pull-through and my plan is to arrive Friday and leave Sunday. She said they still have a couple of spectacular water-front sites as of this morning.

I am hoping/expecting to get the necessary days off from work, although I cannot request more than 90 days in advance.

There doesn't appear to be any pavilion or other covered area, so I presume that we will, like at Alumilina, use picnic tables and such in the open. If the weather looks rainy, I hope people can come through with canopies again.

We are looking forward to this rally, and also hope to get some other shake-downs (in our new-to-us '97 34') done before that.

John, I hope there's no truth that squirrels are over-running the trees there, and we're going to help thin out the population? (tastes like what?)

Phil

John,

We're booked on the lake.

One suggestion, consider making this a new thread announcement about this event.

Time to hook up yet?

Somebody's gotta have it, may as well be you guys.

We have been camping at Wateree for 25 years, only had a waterfront site once. Got lucky that time, a cancellation.

Kathy, we will be nearly neighbors. We are in 54. There is a nice , large open area there beside you that will be good for the gathering point.

We will come in on the 19th also. I am so pumped, it is a great park and should make for a super rally.

And yes, there is an abundance of squirrels down there, makes for a great stew. Takes 4 squirrels to equal 1 possum.

John glad to hear there will be a rally this fall. This time we'll come in the AS and stay awhile. Is there a link to the campground showing the individual sites? Only thing I could find was a general map with no sites...Also, how's the fishing down South? Can we bring our own kayak's. Thanks!

Bob, glad you are coming. Late September is a great time down our way. It is usually still warm so water sports are a good thing. The park has excellent water access and some great back water type paddling, so by all means, bring your kayaks. They have a paved boat launch and tackle shop/store/office on the big water, and easy launching from some sites and also easy access to the back waters. Fishing should be excellant also.

For lack of a better way, I google Lake Wateree State Park. On their website they have a map of the campground and a picture of each site, with a description. They are all great sites, and only a short, enjoyable walk from farthest points.

You will like it, come stay a while.

John

HI John,

Don found 4 squirrels in the SUV this past wknd at Region 3. We should have kept and froze them for this gathering in the fall. neighbor is always after the squirrels and coons. I wll have him keep them for additional flavor in the stew unless they are spoken for. There is a high demand for coons around here.

They sure can be pesky. The ones at Wateree are nice and fat, dining on all the scraps thrown out by the campers. And since no one can hunt them, they have gotten real bold, and greedy.

BTW, #23 is the best site in the park (imho). Lucky you.
