More of Cape Town

OK, Dan has assigned me to represent Cape Town on our adventure. I've been reading Lillie Douglass' book "Cape Town to Cairo". One thing I didn't realize was that her contingent (she indicates not all left Cape Town at the same time) began the caravan in the driving rain. What a way to start a historic journey! It didn't seem to dampen anyone's spirit. Neither did bogging down in the mud the first time they parked for the night.

Since Dan suggested that pot luck dishes might represent those found on the journey, I've been paying attention to foods Lillie mentions. For Cape Town and South Africa, I've found these:
  • prunes, cornflakes, bread and butter, coffee
  • ostrich meat biltong with ostrich egg omelets
  • tea and scones with tart jam and whipped cream
  • hamburgers (which Lillie made in the trailer) made with "heavy white loaf bread"
  • braai-vleis ("fry meat" like barbeque) with sosatie (the sauce, recipe to follow)
  • milk tart (similar to a custard pie)
It's not exactly the BBQ sauce of down south in Dixie, but the sosatie recipe she gives is:
4 sliced onions
4 bay leaves
1 cup vinegar
2 teaspoons sugar
2-3 teaspoons curry powder (must be where they get the heat )
Cook until onions are soft. Marinate sliced or cubed chops of mutton, beef, or pork, one layer meat, one layer sosatie, for 3-4 days (yes, days). Then grill over an outdoor fire.
Y'all might escape the Monkey Gland Sauce. I think I will make a couple of milk tarts instead.

Recipes from Zimbabwe

Danielle and I were just discussing the fact that we are behind schedule on choosing a recipe to represent Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). A quick search on the web finds we have choices ranging from before-dinner cocktails, appetizers, main courses and desserts. Many dishes seem rather ordinary (maybe due to the British influence) and some may require a trip to an international farmers market to find the ingredients.

We'll keep working on ideas. Whatever we end up with it's sure to be fun at this rally.

Time to Make a Decision

Okay all you "RSVP Maybe" folks... It's time to make your decision - go ahead and sign-up for this rally - make the committment. This is going to be one very unique event. Not to be missed.

Danielle and I (and I know there are others) will be attending the Cape (Town) Giriduea, MO to Cairo, IL rally to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the caravan and then were going the The Wilds rally too. It's gonna be crazy but I can't wait!

We put new tires on the Airstream two weeks ago. The Suburban is in good working order - we're ready! Now we just have to work on that Southern Rhodesia recipe.

OK, so after a brief intermission, it's time for me to keep this rally on everybodies mind!

Back to the food assignments! We're gonna skip . They probably eat just like the southerners?

So Jason and Andrea will be assigned to represent Belgian Congo! Seems this country was undergoing quite an era during the rally. Maybe Pee Wee has some stories to shed?

More to come!

Er. . . PeeWee. . . I see that in addition to giraffe, lion, elephant, etc., warrior appears three times on the menu.

Just what kind of warriors were you eating on that caravan?????

Cheers,

Souvenirs Available!

I've given some thought on the best way to get some cool tshirts and other stuff made up for our rally.

After some calculations, it became apparent that the least risky way was to go with a "third part provider". Unfortunately, it's not the cheapest. But, the selection looks good.

Please note that there is no "markup" on these items. I am not making a profit here!

Anyways, your invited to take a look at the following link:

Airstream Camping

I do have some flexability on design and products. If you would like something added, please email me.

Jason is in Mexico City this week, so while he gets to tour the Pyramid of the Sun I have been reading recipes.

I think we're leaning toward a peanut soup served over rice.

I ordered a few shirts today. They should be here in a couple weeks

I also got a message that if I refer a friend, they will get a coupon for $5 of their first order. If anyone is interested, just send me a PM with your email address.

Sadza!

To sadza or not to sadza? Now that's a good question. I've been scouring the internet looking for recipes that represent food indiginous to Southern Rhodesia. Many of the recipes have a European influence. But I finally found a side dish that just might fit be the ticket!

SADZA. I don't know how to pronounce it - I'll work on that. Sadza is made from meal (cornmeal I suppose?) and is sometimes eaten as many as three times a day. I can be served in a variety of ways - plain, with relish or with meat. I liken it to poi (sp?) which is used widely in Hawaii' although sadza is cooked to a much thicker consistency.

So the hunt for Southern Rhodesia recipes continues but you may end up eating sadza as a side dish. Now we just have to work on the relish.

It is possible that sadza is the same as meele mush.

OK Folks,

I rec'd a couple of calls and emails regarding the sunset tour. I'm trying to get a count on availability, and will post it as soon as I get it.

If you are planning on coming, please do me a favor and let me know! Even if you can't pay right now, I need to plan!

I've ran events with ober a thousand people before. I know to expect registrations at the begining and at the end. Thats just the normal way.

Well, we are at the end! PLEASE contact me! Myself and the rest of the rally participants would love to know your coming!

Finally, I'm on vacation this week. I'll be camping at Hocking Hills, so my internet access will be limited.

Please email me at dbihary@hotmail.com

Thanks!

As of this afternoon, about 23 spots remain for the optional sunset tour.

My firm cutoff registration date will be September 8th

Thanks!

pancakes?

I'm not a gourmet cook, however my sister gave me about a GALLON of real maple syrup from Burton Ohio. How about if I make pancakes with real butter and real maple syrup?

Lorrie and I are thinking of coming (not officially signed up yet), but are not cooks, so actually the exotic dish thing is a real negative for us. Would it be a deal breaker to just come with a normal dish to pass?

As for the Sunset Tour, it sounds like fun, but is probably too pricey for us.

It's Dan's event to manage but - I've never met a camper that would turn down any decent food when offered...

I'm not making anything exotic, unless cheesy potato casserole is considered exotic. Come on down and join us.
