2015 Gram Parsons Guitar Pull 9/25 & 26 - Waycross, GA

I heard about the Gram Parsons Guitar Pull and Tribute Festival on another thread on Air Forums. Sounds like an interesting music festival. The GPGP seems laid back/low key and the price is right - $50/person for two days of music and $30 for RV camping.

Guitar Pull is a phrase similar to jam session. The festival is not simply a jam session - there are two stages with bands rotating on and off the stages so it's a conventional music festival in that regard. Don't know exactly why it's referred to as a guitar pull, but it sounds cool!

Purchasing tickets early gets you a $10 discount on the two day pass. RV camping is still $30.

Anyone interested in attending? If we can get some Airstreams to show up we can arrange a breakfast or dinner potluck.

Here's a link to the ticket sales:

https://www.ticketriver.com/event/13766

Here's the link to the festival web site. As of today (3/4/2015) the festival web site has not been updated for 2015.

Emmylou Harris Talks About Gram Parson

Many say Poco, Pure Prairie League, and even The Eagles would not have achieved widespread popularity without the influence of Gram Parsons. Nobody will know for certain since Gram died at such a young age.

In the video below, Emmylou Harris speaks briefly about the life of Gram Parsons.

and my band ATLANTA had similar background. We were often compared to the EAGLES and POCO and were signed by Irv Azoff, Eagles Manager to MCA records.

Gram was a truly inspirational musician...who left us all too soon

The festival web site has been updated to reflect the 2015 dates. Be sure to order tickets early for $40 each... otherwise, the price goes up to $50 each.

Camping is $30.

Hope to see you there.

Purchased Our Tickets!

We've committed! We purchased our festival tickets along with camping. Sounds like it's going to be a great time. Keep an eye on the web site to see when the music lineup is announced.

We're planning to arrive in Waycross around noon on Friday September 25th.

Hey L and D

Thank you so much for posting this. I think in the real world we might could be friends. ha ha. LOVE me some Emmylou. I am a Bluegrasser, who are probably up there with Jazz and Blues musicians as the best at jamming with strangers. I have never of " pull ".( but banjo players are known to PUSH the tempo )

Work and lack of funds will most likely prevent me from attending, but please have a good time for me. Man that sounds like fun.

Great heads up there Dave, does sound like fun.
Was trying to figure the guitar pull thing out too, trying to picture guitars and tractors at the same event.
This sounds better for sure.

Cheers Richard

Here are a few excerpts from Wikipedia...

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic describes Parsons as "enormously influential" for both country and rock, "blending the two genres to the point that they became indistinguishable from each other. His influence could still be heard well into the next millennium." In his essay on Parsons for Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Artist" list, Keith Richards notes that Parsons' recorded music output was "pretty minimal." But nevertheless, Richards claims that Parsons "effect on country music is enormous, this is why we're talking about him now."

In February 2008, Gram's protégée, Emmylou Harris, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Despite his influence, however, Parsons has yet to be inducted. Radley Balko has written that "Parsons may be the most influential artist yet to be inducted to either the Rock and Roll or Country Music Hall(s) of Fame. And it's a damned shame."

Hi Alan,

We hope you can make it. Is Shannon coming with you?

Spread the word about the festival - it would be fun to see some other Airstreams in attendance.

I haven't seen a concert lineup yet but Daniel Romano will be at the festival. He may be the headliner on Saturday. Here's a Youtube video.

well it looks like the Duluth Fall Festival show I have done for 3 years now is the same weekend. It is a great festival with a big turn out and we play center stage closing out Saturday...so no guitar pull for me, but some guitar pickin' instead.

I can certainly understand the conflict and playing at Duluth Fall Festival will be good for your band.

We recently purchased several music CDs to better understand what we'll be experiencing at the GPGP and Tribute Festival. We purchased the most recent Daniel Romano disc as well as Gram Parson GP/Grievous Angel disc, and The Flying Burrito Brothers Anthology two disc set. Wow! What a great set of tunes. Daniel Romano is (IMO) a breath of fresh air - maybe classic air - true to country music roots. I've heard so many of GP songs - sung by GP or various incarnations of his bands - and didn't realize it.

Can you tell that I'm really excited about this festival! I hope I'm not setting the bar too high. I can't imagine that we'll be disappointed. Some friends are considering joining us at the festival. I think they'll like it too.

Thanks for the Rally Ad!

Hi Janet,

Thanks for the rally graphic. It's great and your skills are amazing! I love the way you blended the reflection of the Airstream and Gram Parson's partial profile on the face of the guitar.

Danielle and I are looking forward to a great weekend and hope to see some other Airstreams at the event.

Thumbs up Florida newbies confirmed for 18th Annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull and Tribute Festiv

My wife and I are going to this festival based on this thread. We are new to RV's and to Airstream, so this is going to be our first big trip. We look forward to meeting other Airstreamers and good folks of all types on this odyssey, and at this festival!

Although it is not clear from the concert site, the organizer confirmed to me that $30 is the price for camping for the entire festival, not per night.

Looking forward to meeting you there, or elsewhere on the road!

Hey, that's great news - glad to hear you're going to Waycross. Danielle and I are really looking forward to the festival and hope other Airstreamers will join the festivities. Right now it's a rally of two but hey, wherever two Airstreams are together to have fun it's a rally in my opinion.

We're looking at our schedule and plan to arrive a day early. I'm going to confirm that with the event organizer but I seem to recall he said we can arrive on Thursday. I'll double-check and post again on the subject.

Yes, the $30 fee is for the entire event... not per night.

Glad to see all the interest in this event. Alas, I cannot rally as an Air Streamer as my trailer is now permanently located on the West Coast. My wife and I have attended this event a few times as daytrippers and really enjoy it. The folks there are very friendly and it is very popular with the locals who appreciate a variety of good music.

Mostly leaning toward Americana there are so many acts that everyone will find a new favorite. They recruit mostly in the Georgia and Carolinas and have much talent to draw on. The lesser known acts occupy the side stage during the setups for the main stage but I've found that several of them are truly undiscovered gems. While some try to work a GP tune into their respective repertoires, and the main act always has some linkage to Gram, the whole event is really just geared to having a good time and relaxing to the music. If nothing else, you'll gain an appreciation of the Southern environs from which Gram sprung and the inspiration for tunes like Hickory Wind.

The camping is somewhat limited but there are Electric hookups to help stave off the heat when you need a break. Mostly its a fairground atmosphere so not a whole lot of shade to be had. One of the simple joys of being there is the freedom afforded by this event as compared to the larger more regulated music festivals. Coolers are welcome and while there are vendors, there are no restrictions on what you bring in yourself.

If you've never been to a musical event in the country in Georgia, you are in for a treat. Its a lifestyle that everyone should get a taste of sooner or later. Being there 24x3 should be a blast for all campers as the party really never ends. Again, happy to see that a critical mass is developing and someday, there may be old timers calling these the good old days! As for my wife and I, we'll have to see if we can sneak into the camp area amid the silver twinkies in our RoadTrek B van unnoticed... but we are still Airstreamers at heart.

Hi Tomzstream

Good to hear your comments... you've described exactly what we're hoping to experience!

Don't just stop by - we should plan to spend some time together. Air Forums rallies are open to anyone... regardless of whether you have an Airstream (you do) or just want to experience a good time at a fun location or event.

Danielle and I would enjoy talking Class B travel techniques as we have a 1998 Airstream B190.

If you're interested in parking near each other (I realize it's not a huge place) let us know where to meet in town and we'll try to go in together. Others attending may want to do the same.

Thanks
