2011 - Airstreams in the Wilds!

In September 2009, several Airstreamers gathered in central Ohio to celebrate and recreate the spirit of Wally Byams Capetown to Cario caravan 50 years earlier.

The weekend was very special. The setting was wonderful. Nature cooperated, and we were fortunate to have Dale “Pee Wee” Schwamborn with us to share his personal experiences.

In 2011, Airstreamers will once again be invited to converge on the Wilds! Although it will be difficult to top the 2009 rally, some very significant changes are being planned. Note that care is being taken to not alter the atmosphere previously experienced at the Wilds. The planned alterations will be to enhance the event and make it more inviting to a greater number of participants.

Additions and alterations under consideration include:

- Optional extended length to 4 or 5 days.
- Optional tours of surrounding attractions
- Onsite electrical power.
- Full “Day of Service” in the Wilds!
- Special “Children’s Experience” with the Wilds staff.
- Enhanced evening entertainment

This year I am asking for volunteers to join me to help create this event. Tasks will range from registration processing, entertainment assistance, to facility coordination. I welcome you to contact me if you would like to join the team.

I'm just glad it went well in '09 that they are going to let Airstreamers back for a 2011 event!

Can't wait for the trip - we want to be there!

Although a date has not been selected yet, it is probably going to be fall.

Timing is really tough. It's hard to find a balance between school, good boondocking weather, and other rallies.

I'm up for suggestions!

We love traveling in October, good time of year for that area too. Do kids get Columbus day off? It seems kids get way more holidays and time off than when I remember going to school.

I'm in no way going to argue doing this in Oct. based on Ohio summer heat and humidity, but I know last time that there were a few people that wanted to come from longer distance but couldn't due to kids in school. If we're going to have elec. power (30A?) then everyone could run A/C if they have it. The again, judging by the number of generators running at the Bash (where I'm posting from), anyone who can't go without elec. or A/C has already outfitted themselves nicely so who cares whether the elec is 30A, eh?

Just a thought to get more people there. I'm personally fine with Oct, too.

I see the news has been out a week (and I've missed it until today!) - the Birthday Bash is going to be an annual event - "The Second Annual Birthday Bash is going to be held June 30- July 5 In Western Pennsylvania."

Any more information on dates for the Wilds 2011? We're also available to help - just let us know what you need

I'm just looking to gauge interest!

I'm considering Labor Day weekend as the "main event" for "Airstreams in the Wilds, 2011!" Dates are: Sept. 3-5, 2011

This will allow those with school kids to have an extra travel day. Additionally, the rally will actually probably start earlier in the week for more enjoyment and day-trips to other attractions.

Please let me know your thoughts!

A year ahead is hard to plan on, but we have no standing plans for Labor Day weekends. This year, we didn't even go camping on Labor Day weekend! Sept 3-5 next year sounds good to us.

I know many airstreamers avoid camping on Labor Day. But, this event has a "private" campground!

We alway leave Labor Day weekend to the "amateurs" but for the Wilds it sounds like a great weekend. It would probably be easier for us to travel south than north that weekend. I would like to come this time around.

I've received word from the Wilds that we are "go" for Labor Day Weekend! Official details are being worked out, but unless a major problem comes up the main event will happen Sept 3-5, 2011!

A TENTATIVE event has been added to the rally calendar. Feel free to sign up, but do know that the dates may shrink or grow a little,

Thanks DanB for making all of the arrangements! I'm glad the Wilds are letting the group come back. The dates aren't great for Mike and I, so we are going to see what we can do to make it work. I've put us as a "maybe" on the rally sign-up.

Welcome fellow Ohioan, Castaway! We look forward to meeting you. There are many of us on these forums who camp around OH together and have rallies here and there. We hope you will watch the Ohio Informal for the weekend thread and stop in for a campout with all of us. We are looking forward to the Wilds next year, but there will be many campouts before then!
