nah, but we were early. It was a great run - I was hoping I bumped into someone there - and suprisingly we did. We had done this once before (going to the playa prior to Burning Man) and met others then too...its a great place - a magnet.

hey check out this link on you tube! It was taken from the movie about Hitler in his final days in his bunker - and applied to Burning Man.

Airstreams passing on the Playa

When we rolled out of Gerlach towards the playa we see this 30 foot streamer on the road ahead. Excited we caught up. To our surprise it was SilverBear. We both drove out on the playa at the 8 Mile entrance. We hung out for some time out there talking. We told him about the geyser, the storage area, the hot springs, and so on. We also advised him he didn't want to be on the playa if it started raining and raining - that is if he was planning on going anywhere. The lady at the office said conditions were bad as it was. The wind was terrible, dust was high, and it looked like rain was going to dump from the sky.....

So, Mary and I start out for the road - proceeding on our way home.
We were both thinking it, driving very slow....
watching...

He looked around
went inside the trailer
came outside
looked at the sky....
got in his rig (pointed at the road)...

and turned...and headed strait out into the playa.

YES!!!
He was driving that rig right out into the maelstrom of it all. Here's to SilverBear, heres to all you out there, and here's to life. Thats the spirit!

I caught this photo of the 30 footer raging towards the dust.

Award

Chopper Pilot:
Your post "..raging towards the dust" deserves an award from all the burners here. You have captured the spirit.

Try this again...

Craig, you are too funny! The best part of heading into the maelstrom, was getting to experience life on the playa.

And spending the weekend here at the Black Rock Rendezvous was fantastic. Learned about the history and ecology of the high desert, met some awesome people - most are long time burners - met Michael Michael, one of the originators of Burning Man, who gave a talk about the history of Burning Man. We went on various tours of the playa, hot springs, trails, and much more!

The band Albino (I understand they have played at Burning Man) played last night. YEP! It was a great introduction to Black Rock and the playa, especially for me - a first timer. Plenty of the old burners I met also had great things to say about this event.

Y'all might think about doing this event next year... I'm probably coming back. I love it here!

I didn't get my photo loaded with my previous post so if you want you can see the photos from the Black Rock Rendezvous at:
.Mac Web Gallery

Damn, did I miss something? Maybe too busy to have paid attention. This sounds like super fun. I thought maybe you all joined up by coincidence, but this was a BM planned thing? darn.

Hot springs, where are they?

Hey Zep,

I got an email from someone at BM about this annual event - put on by a bunch of environmental/historical/conservation organizations including BM (although not actually a BM event). Given this was on the way to my next destination, I thought I'd see what the place was like. Absolutely a great event and worth going to, especially for burners who want to experience the area in it's natural setting.

There are a number of hot springs on the fault line that runs along the east edge of the playa and northward. Some are actually "boiling hot" and people have died from jumping in. I put my hand in the water running downstream and... oh yeah! Damn HOT!

Sounds like an interesting event Paul...and great photos.

Makes me want to get my feet in the playa dust.

Sorry I missed it.
