Vintage Fisher Regulator Rebuild vs. Replace
Our 1969 Overlander has a small gas leak in the regulator. We want to be safe but also want to retain the original look. As newbies we seek the wisdom of those who have passed before us. Do we try to find someone (reputable and reliable) to rebuild what we have or do we replace it? If so, what would be the best replacement choice? Thank you.

DO NOT EVER attempt to rebuild a LPG regulator.
To do so, is asking for a huge potential problem, since you cannot buy parts for them.
That comes from the sales manager of Robert Shaw controls.

It is highly unlikely you will find anyone who will rebuild the regulator. Nowadays, it is a liability issue. Fisher still makes regulators for industry, but they dropped out of the RV market years ago, and (the last time I looked) they don't even sell rebuild kits.
InlandRV sells a Fisher (966?) regulator touted as being OEM to Airstream.
Others here have mentioned Marshall regulators. I'm sure they do a fine job, but they don't look anything like a Fisher.
FWIW, Rego was OEM on my Overlander. After being unable to get rebuild parts for it, it was replaced with a Fisher.

While the temptation to stay original is understandable I'd suggest updating to a new unit as well.

Get a new one auto change-over. No Point in taking a risk with another old one.

Tom.
Many years ago, the original Fischer became obsolete.
What we came up with is replaces that original set up, it's not a Fischer brand, but does an equal to job.

Hmm, I see that now; It looks like you are now selling Marshall regulators. I've heard good things about them.
But they sure is ugly compared to a Fisher...
You made me feel kinda old with that crack about " Many years ago, the original Fisher became obsolete." You sold me the Fisher I'm still using.

Aloha Tom
If you feel "kinda old", I guess that makes me "'old" for certain.
On the other hand, beauty is only skin deep, it's the performance that counts.
Right???
After all, we did have the Edsel. But, it was ugly all together.
Mahalo.

Okay Guys, I got the picture. Beauty is only skin deep (thank goodness) and safety is what saves your skin! So, we'll buy the ugly (but safe) new regulator and move on to the next item on our AS list. I wonder how many other women are getting a gas regulator for Mother's Day??? Thanks so much for weighing in to help us out on this one.

OK, I am something of a detail person, but the looks of regulators are something about which even I haven't obsessed. Does anyone have a photo of one of these beautiful Fisher regulators? I want to know what I'm missing.

Okay, I guess it's a size matters kinda thing
Check the link in post #3 above. While both regs are manly in appearance, the blue/gray one is the Fisher.
Marshall regs, while I'm sure they get the job done, are smaller.
My "ugly" comment ultimately centered on the lack of paint on the Marshall (a minor dig on Andy NEVER entered my mind ).
A good reg is a good reg - appearance is not important.

Unless Marshall made some major changes in their regulators, they are JUNK. I had TWO fail in less than 3 months on my 2002 25 ft Safari. After the second one failed, I changed brands. If I remember correctly, we had six or eight fail on a 15 unit caravan from Michigan to International in Souix Falls. So many were failing that Airstream had cases of replacements (about 3 ft cubes).

See 400,000 btu Automatic Changeover Propane Regulator
for information. It costs about double the Marshall, but worth it in my opinion. Sold the trailer and bought a motorhome, but was working well when I sold the trailer.
ps. I have a new one in the sealed package that I would sell for $50. PM me if interested.

Peace of mind is more important than cost

Just kidding; I know I could paint it if it really bothered me. Interestingly, it costs less than what I paid for my Fisher eons ago.

Tom,
The paint is not there to make polishing easier.

Yes, I am interested in your regulator. Please send me any info I need or pictures. I have an '95 as with a Fisher PER regulator. It indicates an empty tank in both positions though the tanks are not empty.
Thank you, Superman
