I have purchased a new automatic switch over regulator for my rig. I noticed on the instructions if said to use pipe thread compound on the gas lines to ensure good seals at installation. I always thought pipe thread compound on gas lines was a no-no. What's the scoop here.
The use of any kind of sealant on flared fittings is most definitely a no no. But on pipe fittings it is ok. Here is something to check out if you are not sure. I alway check for leaks after I have it all hooked up with a soapy water solution. Use a small flux brush and with dish soap and water (10% soap and 90% water). If you see bubbles that is where the leaks are.
If you want to use compound, my suggestion would be the yellow teflon tape that is approved for gas line installations. I have a roll of it at home that I bought years ago at the hardware store. The older putty type stuff was really for use on threaded black pipe lines that were prevelant years ago in older homes.
