Rod that holds tanks

Moved '78 AS and in the process the support rod broke at one of the holes where the roll pin goes. Wonder why there was a roll pin hole three inches above tongue weld? The rod was welded to AS. Have ground off old weld. Was hoping to thread the hole and screw in a new rod. Not an option. Threaded rod seems to be the concensus. Although alot of work was thinking about buying a solid hot dipped rod, thread the top and bottom, prime and paint. My reasoning was to reduce the chance for rust. Two things may prevent this from happening. The old rod had a roll pin and hole about ten inches down from the top. I now understand that this keeps the regulator from dropping all the way to the bottom when both tanks are removed. I also now understand why there was a second hole for another roll pin. This was for 20# tanks. Drill holes for replacement pins? Scrap this idea and use threaded rod and replace when it gets rusty?

The pins and holes ate pre-drilled for the different capacity (and height) tanks.

Had read your forum previously. Alot of good info. One of the reasons I removed the LP tanks before I moved the AS to my home. Found 1/2 inch stainless steel threaded rod at HD. ($9) Will check to see if threads match equipment. Should be able to attach alot quicker than welding and threading a new solid rod. Thanks. Jack
