Replacing tanks

These tanks appear to be oringinal, the local fill station says they have the old style valves and they would fill them or change the valves.

Said too old.

Is this true there's an age limit?

Anyway what size do they look like 30G?

I can but new 30's for $61 and 40's for $65 if needed.

Yep, tanks now must have OPD valves they keep from overfilling the tank.
Tanks also need to have an inspection done every 11 or 12 years indicated by a date stamp. You can have your tanks updated with the new valves and tested at your local propane dealer. If they are steel it is cheaper to just buy new tanks.

I had the same problem when I first got our 71 Safari. The local propane dealer changed the valves, re-certified the tanks and filled them with propane for about $100. Mine were the aluminum tanks and I didn't want to go to a steel tank.

Kinda figured that, if I buy 2 30's about how long would they last,
say in warm weather vs cold weather.

Or should I get 40's, for only a few bucks more,
the guy at LP gas center said the 30's will last all season I find that hard to believe.

It took me almost a year (3 camp days a month) to use 1/2 of a 30# tank. All boondocking with only a little use of a Cat heater. If you stick with 30# tanks you should not have to modify the mounting hardware or the propane lines.

Picked up my aluminum tanks yesterday from Amerigas. Had them recertified and a new valve put on for $45 each and it took less than a week. These aluminum tanks seem significantly lighter than the steel tanks on my other trailer, which is nice when taking the tanks to get refilled.

It all depends on how cold you mean! Up here, the ski-campers generally do about five days on two 30-lb tanks, but that's very, very extreme, not weather that I personally would ever camp in (around +20 during the day down to around -15 at night). In more temperate weather, you should be able to hold for a long, long time on two 30-lb tanks.

Yeah, no poop. Folks who camp wintertime in this stuff with an RV ought to have their noggens examined, IMHO. More to the point of the thread, though, two 30-lb tanks should last a long, long time unless you're nuts enough to camp in extreme cold!

I need to purchase either two new steel ones or two aluminium ones. I am leaning towards steel for now and may upgrade down the road to the nice lightweight aluminium ones. Locally I can get steel ones for 68 dollars each. This seems high to me. Any advice where I can purcahse these? And possibly drop off my old ones? I considered updating the ones I have already, but they have been painted over due to rust already, so I might as well buy new ones. Any tips are apprexiated. I live in Southern New Hampshire.

I've already tried calling Amerigas, Home Depot, Wamart, Blue Rhino, and Eastern and none of them could help me with 30 # sized tanks.

We beleive we aren't able to test out our furnace without more gas in our tanks. We've tried everything to turn on our furnace. So this got pushed up in prioirty with our renovation.

I typically have to have a stove burner running in order to get the gas to flow enough to displace the air in the furnace's line.
once the pilot lights up, it takes a good 60 seconds of continuing to hold open the safety valve before the thermocouple heats up enough to keep the gas flowing.
you might want to pull that thing out and take it over to the RV place, and have them tune it up and bench test it. Its potentially a very dangerous device that you don't want to mess around with.

for testing purposes, you should be able to hook up any old tank for a gas grill...

I'll be sure to tell this to bill. Once we have these new propane tanks on, replaced our water heater, and know once and for all if the furnace works then we can shift our concentration back to the interior.. oh, i mean after we rervit and gasket the vista views too.. ugh...thanks for your tips.

There are a lot of gas dealers in your location. You could have them look them over and make suggestions.
I like aluminum. We use our 30 lb'ers for the grill, the Airstream and when we run out of gas in the house tank (Laugh, but sometimes it happens even on auto fill). The 30 lb'ers are easy to move and last a long time. Just don't leave the grill on.

looks like campers inn is my best bargain, and lowest refill fees too.
but the aluminium ones will have to come down the road. i would love to have them though.

All good advise on the tanks. However, don't get too negative on the winter camping. Granted, I may be a little off center, but I love to winter camp. A few years back I just hated the thought of camping season coming to an end. Therefore, I just made a few adjustments to camping style and now camp at least once-twice a month year round. Of course, it doesn't get as cold in Missouri as those of you who live in the north and east (coldest I have camped is -5 degrees). Snow is great, but I try to stay in port when there's ice. Totally different things to enjoy, buy still most enjoyable. As others have stated, the 30's have always been more than adequate (summer and winter).
