If your old cylinders are in good condition (no heavy-duty rust, no dents, no bent collars), then it's worth your while and your money to have the old ones retrofitted with new valves and recertified.

Check with a bulk propane supplier. They either do it, or can point you in the right direction. Look up Propane in your yellow pages. Best of luck!

If they are aluminum tanks you definitely want to keep them.

If steel
Yes, aluminum - keep - if steel, then throw away and get new ones... just my two cents

If steel, you could toss them and get aluminum tanks. They look great when polished.

Let's see, $25 for a new valve vs $150 + shipping for a new Worthington aluminum tank. By the way a new aluminum tank may not be exactly the same height as your old ones. In NM nobody ever asked about recertifying tanks and nobody in any other state asked if they were. They just look at the different shape valve. If you want to get rid of those old nasty aluminum tanks and put on nice new white painted steel tanks let me know I'm your man.

Lumatic...have you no shame.... I agree, send those 'old nasty aluminum tanks' out our way...
Really, though... your aluminum AS needs aluminum tanks...just change the valves, I did it on our 78 AS...cost only about $30 which included a new pressure test - aluminum tanks last just about forever if there's no corrosion on em'...

I have 2 large aluminum tanks that had the old valves date on the tanks 1973, the tanks were in good condition. Had the valves switched over, i think they were $35. ea. the old tanks were also certified (san diego thing ?). I'm happy

Agreed, especially if they have the highly undesirable external gauges!
I’ve even got a couple of nice new steel 40lb OPD bottles for consideration.

If you have steel tanks you are going to want to replace them. Just buy them local. It they are aluminum tanks you definitely want to keep them like AZFLYCaster says.
Aluminum tanks have differant valves from steel tanks. It has to do with the shape of the tank. Any place that can pressure test the tanks can take the old valves out and put the new ones in. They most likely won't have the Valves for the aluminum tanks.
Click here to see the 30lb valve
Click here to see the 40lb valve
Also, click here to see the whole rundown on OPD Valves.
