Propane tank valve stops gone
We recently had our tanks filled on our 2015 27FB for the first time since we have owned it. The guy who filled it said there was an issue with the valves on both tanks likely caused by someone over-loosing. Basically, the stops are stripped or something so you can fully loosen the knobs until they come off. Anyway, the guy said we should replace the tanks. Too bad, because we are getting ready to leave on a long-term trip and the tanks are full.
Anyone have experience with this? Do tanks need to be replaced? If so, are these 30lb tanks on the 2015s - I need to get in order since we leave soon. Any way to get all that propane we bought out of them, or just don’t worry about that?
Thanks!

Aluminum or steel? If steel, my not cost effective to replace the valves. If aluminum, definitely have new valves installed. Any full service propane distributor can service and certify, if necessary.

If they dont leak when open several full turns, use up the propane in there presently.

Replacement steel Worthington tanks are about $70 bucks each, unless you can find them on sale somewhere...

They are steel tanks. We will be traveling full time starting in about a month, so are the tanks pretty easy to find out and about on the road if we use up all the propane first?

30# ers are a bit more rare than 20# ers. But start checking around at farm fleet stores, camping world etc.

How did he figured out that the knobs would come all the way off and why did he fill the tanks after? Just wondering.

I bought a 30 lb tank at Tractor Supply when one of the steel tank's valve failed while we were traveling in New England. I remember it was a brand name, Worthington or Manchestrer. (can't remember which) They filled the new tank at the store and disposed of my old empty tank. Quick and easy!
ps
Before replacing I would stop by a propane distributor's place (not a filling station where any store clerk can fill the bottle), where they have a mechanic that is licensed to inspect tanks and changes valve, and have them check the valves function. Tell then what the guy who filled your tanks said.

Were the tanks filled at a propane supply company or by a "guy" at the local filling station? I would call, or take the tanks to a certified facility and have them confirm that the valves are bad. Did the guy offer to sell you new tanks or replace the valves on your tanks? Easy way to increase sales and make a profit! JMHO

The tanks were filled at a campground and the guy filling them did not offer to sell me a new one. He seemed like a pretty honest guy. Having a propane facility look at them is a great idea. Thanks, y’all.

Had a valve fail in the same manner on our Worthington Aluminum tank...
Strapped the tank to the maple tree with a ratcheting tie down strap, warmed up the threads with the DW's hair dryer, removed the valve and ordered the correct replacement from ODM.
Purged and filled at CW.👍

Having the valves replaced would for SURE be less expensive than purchasing new cylinders. Take it to a dealer; they'll be licensed to do the job. They'll check the length of the valves required and get you back in business. (The DT marking on the collar of your cylinders is the length of the tube sticking out from the bottom of the valve and defines which valve they'll use.)
If the valves are currently in the open position, leave them that way and use up all of the propane in the cylinder before taking it in. Otherwise, the dealer will have to pump the cylinder dry before working on it. You can do the whole process twice so that you're taking in a nearly dry cylinder each time.
Oh, and your campground filler is right. If somebody overtightened or overopened a valve, there is no way at all that the handle should simple come off. Indeed, the handles on modern OPD valves are designed so that folks can't simply unscrew them. If they come off, there is definitely something wrong.
Finally, you can shop around if you'd like to see which dealer will charge the least to replace a valve. Of course, you'll have to buy a new valve (a "20 buck" item), so you're basically looking at labor. Some dealers will charge more; you may even find one to do it for free (labor), provided you also refill the cylinder at that dealer before you leave.

A couple of years ago, when servicing at JC, one of my tank valves was leaking. I took the tank over to Moulton Gas (nearby Wapakeneta) and it was replaced for $10.

You would need to tie a cylinder to something really solid like a tree in order to remove a valve! And you can indeed replace a valve by yourself, provided you have a way to anchor the tank really, really well and a nice, long wrench. And, just as important, that you order an appropriate replacement valve: THe DT marking on the collar of your existing cylinder is the number you need in order to get a new one.

Wrench plus vehicle met its match. Never claimed digital device master class answers.
