Propane re-fill denied

For three years we have been filling our tanks at the Flying J in Knoxville, TN. Yesterday, young man said we couldn't fill our tank because our tanks are more than 5 years past their re-manufacture date of 2001. I know there was some discussion of this in the past, but I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that Flying J is now owned by Pilot and there are new rules?
We went to U-Haul today to fill. No problem.

After the first inspection (12 years) they need to be re inspected every 5 years. It sounds like you are due...

Quote:
Cylinders are subject to recertification (also known as requalification) twelve years from their date of manufacture and every five years after that. For example, a cylinder manufactured in January of 2000 will have to be recertified in January of 2012 meaning if you take your bottle to the propane company in April of 2012 to be refilled, it will have to be requalified by authorized personnel before it can be filled.

Probably the guys at U-Haul weren't aware of this, or didn't care about it.

Had the same problem, took the tanks to the local propane distributor.....they inspected and re-certified the tanks and used both a metal stamp and a label to indicate the tanks had been re-certified. It was the local farmers co-op....no charges for the service!

If they are 20lb tanks you can take them to one of those places that exchanges tanks instead of filling them. I do that with my BBQ tanks from time to time to keep them current.
