Propane/CO detectors

Has anyone installed these detectors themselves? I would like to order one of each; however, Camping World wants $102.00 each to install. That leaves me to ask, "how hard can this be?". We have replaced all of the lights in the Argosy ourselves. Is this something we could also do ourselves? I know they work on the 12V system. I have 12V outlets all over the trailer. Could one of those be refitted for this detector?

The placment is key for propane detectors. Keep them low. Propane is heaver then air and will sink to the floor or low point. Yes you can do it yourself... have fun

I have been looking to add a CO detector to my unit. I saw this unit at Home Depot and was going to get it. It is battery powered which means I would not have to tap into a 12 volt wire in my trailer. It would also not be draining my battery when the trailer is not in use. I will most likely relocate my existing smoke alarm (battery powered) to the kitchen and put this unit in the sleeping area. Any comments on this type of unit?

The link in preview is not working, but the unit is:
Kidde
Battery-Operated Voice-Alert CO and Smoke Alarm
Model 900-0102

I put one of these in but minebut it is powered from the onboard deep cycle battery. Took all of about 30 minutes. I mounted it under the dinette on the top of the kickplates about 20" from the battery. The stove, furnace, fridge and propane lamp are all up front anyway. Kinda out of the way and you have to look for it to see it. I can post a picture if anyone is interested. I sleep a little easier knowing its there.

I installed a LP detector, tied into 12v, in the kitchen cabinet near the floor, because LP sinks. I installed it in there because I figured if the water heater, stove, or fridge leaked, it would sniff it out first if it was in the cabinet with them. The WH is in the closet right next door to it. Very easy to install, I just had to cut a thin piece of plywood with a hole for the detector, and mount it in the cabinet, then spice into the wires that were already there.

I installed a CO detector, battery operated, on top of the bathroom cabinet. This puts it almost directly above the furnace. CO rises, and so this should catch it if the furnace produces any. It's just velcroed to the wall.

I also sleep better knowing they are watching out for stuff I either cannot, or might not, notice.

azflycaster,
There is supposedly a difference between the RV rated dectectors and the home rated ones...dunno what the difference is...I use a home rated one with the digital read out, if it is sensing CO I want to know how much!

Isn't there a difference between a CO2 detector and a propane gas detector?

Ken,
To the best of my knowledge, CO (carbon monoxide) detectors are different from Propane detectors. I have a dual fire/carbon monoxide detector and am contemplating replacing my nonfunctioning propane detector that came in my '86 Sovereign.

Thats what I thought - so you probably should have both if you really want to be safe.... to my knowledge, they do not make a battery powered propane gas detector.....

Juel, They are very easy to install, just be sure to install the LP detector at a low point as others have said. I just found a 12 volt wire and wired into it. I would suggest a rv carbon monoxide detector before a home one.

Ken,
My wife tested the smoke detector last weekend with a steak in the broiler. Works great, tastes great too!

Is that thing a smoke detector? I thought it was an oven timer.

The sawdust from cutting out your floorboards with a circular saw will test your smoke detector. It will apparently ruin it too

And you know this because?...
I heard you tried to rinse the ant and roach spray off by submerging the trailer. Any truth to this rumor?
