The Blue Rhino and Amerigas exchange thing provides less than a full tank... its like 14.7 pounds whereas when you go to a fill company yu actually get a full tank! I would invest in aluminum bottles and have them last forever despite the inital cost!

I will have mine recertification when the time comes and replace if necessary. Not going to chance a safety issue to save a dollar.

I had a valve go bad on an old tank (needed to be re-certified) while traveling last year. The valve knob was stuck and would not turn off. I could not find a 30# exchange. I decided to just replace the whole thing. A new 30" steel tank at Tractor Supply was ~$70. Problem was, they would not dispose of the bad tank, so I had to haul it in the back of the truck till I got home. I knew our local county dump recycles propane tanks.
How have you disposed of old bottles while on the road?

My propane supplier visual checks aluminum tanks if opd valves no damage or welds, nothing else need to be done for recertify. NO CHARGE to recertify if pur. gas, also stated no pressure test for aluminum tanks, only steel.

I recently twisted off the handle on my valve. Took it to Hetco and they replaced the valve and recertified it. Do not remember how much it was exactly but it was surprising cheap. They had to burn off the gas and replace valve and certify the tank and did it for about $17.00. I had the second tank recertified at the same time for about $5.00. Before I took them in I sanded them, treated any surface rust, and repainted them.

Update.
Hi, today I took my tanks to my local propane dealer. One was nearly empty so I had it filled while I was there. A visual inspection and leak test was performed. The cost per tank was $10.00. As you can see my tanks were not a date match from the Airstream factory.

I don't know if it is province by province but here in BC recertification involves a new valve and inspection and is good for another 10 years. I just had it done for $23 Canadian as a new 20lb tank at Costco is $37.
Seemed the way to go.

Certification
We are located in Michigan. We recently purchased another Airstream, aluminum 30# Worthington Tanks were originally dated 1984 & 1985, they were certification date stamped in the early 90's and again in the late 90's. I took them to a local propane supplier, they performed a visual examination for free, placed a flammable sticker on the non-exposed side, filled them both, and placed a date code on them followed by the letter "E". I inquired, and he advised me that the "E" designated a visual inspection.
