Need New Water Tank 27' Overlander

Hey Guys:

Need a new water tank. Not interested in the $500.00 factory version.

I did find once that's generic @ 39 gallons and is only 9" deep. IT will extend 4" below my main C beams, but I'll probably have my welder fab up something to protect the tank and make it a bit aero.

I'll have to make all the various connections, having never done this before anything you'd want me to know?

As always, thanks a bunch!

Hi there. May I ask what "water tank?". Your 72 Overlander may very well have the fresh water tank above the floor and in the front of the trailer. I am unsure where the black tank is mounted in the year 72. And I don't think you have a gray water tank. If not, it is worthwhile to add one.

Inca Plastics in California has been making RV polyethylene tanks for 50 years. Then have hundreds of configurations. You can download their catalog and thumb through it until you find the dimensions you want. They are happy to sell one tank. Shipping such a bulky item is expensive. Inca also has nifty grommet connections for your ABS drain and vent lines. Ask about those too.

Inca supplied my new black and gray water tanks for my 66 Trade Wind. I decided on a 9" deep tank as I wanted the drains to exit the street side of the trailer like most RVs do. I hung the tanks with angle irons bolted to the frame rails. It is not original, but it functions well.

There are many other suppliers of polyethylene tanks for trailers. It all depends on what you need.

Good luck with your project. It's a big one.

Thanks David:

I'll check them out. I am considering adding a Gray tank as well, but I'd prefer not to. This is my first TT and I am skeptical how much it will be used Boondocking. I'd hate to go through all Ive done and kick myself later, though...

Shipping is a killer on bulky things. I've actually found the 39 gallon tank for only 169 on amazon with cheap shipping.

My son feels the same way on his 69 Globetrotter. He doesn't need a gray tank because he can hook up to a sewer connection at the RV park. I still like to rinse the slinky when draining the gray tank. I drain the black tank first, and then the gray. It helps.

Sounds like you are on your way. And I agree you don't need a big project like a new gray tank install on your first Airstream. You will learn what you want to improve as you use the thing.

Don't forget to check marine tank outfits. They have all shapes and sizes for obvious reasons. Here is one option: Kracor Incorporation Rotational Molders - Marine Product Catalog

You are right on the reference to marine parts. We are looking for a new dinette table ideas, and my son found many nifty tables used in marine applications. We did buy a three stage gas strut collapsible table pedestal from Southfield who makes all kinds of pedestals for the boat market. We saw this pedestal in a new Airstream at the RV show. It was the sturdiest one we saw. The son envisions a table for eating, then a coffee table for relaxing, and then a bed support for sleeping. Maybe we can do it.

Marine related parts are certainly an option. I worked in a rotomolding shop for several years. It is a great process for "inexpensive" tanks and other hollow plastic parts. There are many rotomold shops around as shipping can cost as much as the tank itself.

Good info on the marine suppliers for specialized components...

Shipping is the bane of purchasing tanks. Fortunately, Amazon has a 39 gallon which will work for only $169ish, shipping is free using PRIME, so it's a pretty attractive deal. I will have to make all the plumbing connections, but maybe that's an advantage in this case since I'm relocating everything - I can connect precisely where I need!

Thanks guys!
