Lp Detector

Attached is a picture of the LP gas detector unit in my '86 Sovereign 25'. Was this factory installed? It has an On/Off switch but the switch does not seem to do anything. Short of letting some LP escape from a cylinder near this detector, is there any way to test to see if it is working?

Eat lots of beans....
They actually sell a can of smelly stuff than can be used to test LP and Freon Detectors. But putting a shot of LP in would be the quickest way...not necessarily the safest.

Use a propane powered torch and just let a little gas out instead of lighting it. You are in full control that way. My LP gas detector does not have a switch on it so it is a drain on the battery all the time. A switch might not be a bad thing as long as you remember to turn it on when you are using the trailer.

Atwood ProTechTor® Series 2001

Anyone have any insight into the workings of this particular model of propane detector? The AS manual gives some basic information and refers to the detector instructions that should have been included with the paperwork, but wasn't. For the past few weeks the LED indicator has been changing to solid orange, indicating a circuit fault (whatever that may be). If I ran the test procedure, it would return to the normal for a few days. Now the LED has turned to solid red, and the test /reset has no affect. I tried the maunfacturer's site, but they have even less information than the AS manual.
Thanks.

Sounds like time for a new detector or you really have a prppane problem you need to fix. Turn of the tanks for a few days (if weather and use allow) and see if the problem clears. If not, buy a new detector from a company that makes a reliable product and has service personnel you will be happy with.

There were no signs of a propane leak, and I have already tried airing out the trailer. If there was a leak, the detector is supposed to sound an alarm and blink red. I suppose the unit could be defective, but I want to make sure it's not something simple. It's got a year and a half left on the warranty, but I would prefer to resolve the issue myself before I make the 140 mile round trip to the dealer, if possible. Again, no instructions were provided in the information package, and no useable information can be found on the Atwood site. The brochure on their site mentions that the detector provides information about battery condition in addition to propane detection, but I have no idea how it does this. I keep the batteries charged, and they are showing 100%.

Craig, I guess it was factory installed, as it is the same brand as mine was and in the same position. I believe the actual detector has a finite life span, certainly less than 20 years. I replaced mine with a new unit. Nick.

I finally got through to an Atwood service tech. He said the solid red light indicates a circuit failure, and the unit will have to be replaced. Looks like I will be going back to the dealership anyway.
