I used to keep my spare right there and would cable lock it and my tall aluminum tanks all together!

We use this handle little lock... It's not fool proof but it will make them work for it it...

Unfortunately, for the life of me I can't remember where I got it!

You can also Google "Propane Tank Lock" and find some ideas/products.

So how common is tank theft?

Is this a frequent problem? Does it generally happen in camp grounds or in outside storage lots?

Personally I have never heard of a case of tanks being stolen but I suppose anything is possible.

Most cases of propane bottle theft I've heard of have generally been rural areas and the theory is that the thieves are using the tanks to store anhydrous ammonia they steal to make meth. Late last year I heard about a bunch of tanks stolen from those vending racks around Kansas City, I think (some midwestern city I'm sure, KC I'm less certain about.)

We in Idaho who camp very rural and boondock a lot need to be somewhat careful of the hunters who use old RV's for their hunting camps. They run out of propane and look for a source which does not involve going 50 miles to town for a refill.

Certainly not common, but it does happen now and then.

For anyone who thinks it's not worth locking your tanks in one way or another, just wait until you are the "rare" victim. It will cost you big time. We had our's stolen at a RV storage area. Here are the costs that you must consider: Cost of 2 tanks; cost of purging the new tanks; cost of filling 2, 30 gal. tanks; cost of the hassle driving around to get all this done. Yes... if you lock them, a crook can damage the unit in the theft process, however, statistically, it's easier to go on to the next RV that offers no challenges to the crook. They want easy in - easy out to make it faster.

Question

Keep it KISS & TINY...

POI...remember the harder you make it for an imaginary thief the longer it it would take in an improbable emergency.

Google Fortress GasLock.
I have this one on my propane tanks.
They gave it to me free for testing and writing a review.
May retail between $50 and $70.
It isn't too hard to get off when refilling propane tanks.
