Is it Evil to Paint Aluminum Tanks ?
I ended up with a pair of aluminum tanks when I bought my 75, I was gung ho on polishing them, but when it cams down to it, I decided it would be easier just to paint em ...
Sacrilege?

No. It is sacrilege to call them "tanks." They're cylinders, not tanks. Tanks are built in; cylinders are removable.
As long as your paint hasn't obscured the data stamped into the metal of the cylinders, no problem. If the paint has obscured the stamped data, it will be difficult to get them recertified when the time comes.

Dang engineers!
Yea they are cylinders...
The data is still very visible. They were already painted when I got them so it was just way easier than trying to clean them up and polish them.

Sacrilege, maybe not.
But I think you would have been money ahead by selling the aluminum tanks and buying new steel ones. Plus, I'm not sure how the paint will hold up on the aluminum compared to steel over time.
End the end, you own it, you do what you want with it.
Enjoy,

My tanks were painted silver. Stripped them and did a little polishing. This is what I ended up with. Probably could us a little refreshing.

I painted the tanks (yes, I call them tanks) on my Bambi II silver. It did not have a tank cover. Not painting the tanks on the Safari, it has a nice aluminum cover.

I like that you painted them. And the trailer. Bare metal is boring all the time. And waay too much time to polish. Carry on!!

Is it Evil to Paint Aluminum Tanks ?
Of course it's evil to paint aluminum tanks. It's also illegal in 37 states... The bare aluminum police will write you a ticket for the first offense. Last year alone, over 187 Airstream owners were jailed and fined heavily for painting their aluminum tanks. President Obama weighed in on the issue, saying, "I have a phone and a pen, and we will make this federal law! The desecration of the sacred aluminum must be stopped!" I never realized just how great of a president he is...
-Red, going just a bit over the top... A bit.

Man, you are right. I spent way too many hours polishing my trailer and it needs it again.
I am going to put a little more paint on the trailer to reduce the shiny area even more, and then I will repolish.
And besides, truth be told, my trailer is too beat up to truly be a shiner.
