My black one pound cylinders have never blown the pressure relief... Nor the dark green ones.

Ooh ooh, I think we've found the next ST vs LT debate.

Fan of polish....or plain

I guess you can do with the tanks as you like. They are yours. You could have sold the aluminum ones and painted some cheaper steel ones. Anyway, that red will knock 'em dead somewhere....

Is it Evil to Paint Aluminum Tanks ?

If you look carefully toward the top right in the second picture I posted to this thread you will see my red steel tanks....

I might have polished the aluminum tanks if they were not already painted grey when I got them with my 75.

I don't know, but I think the shape of the Aluminum tanks is just more cool looking than the steel tanks.

And that they last about forever. Plenty of repatriated alum tanks still around in the 1970s with the swastika.

I went to Home depot to look at their propane cylinders, and there it was propane ''tanks'' on the sign. No wonder everyone calls them tanks instead of cylinders.

After painting one tank black I was informed it couldn't be filled because it wasn't a heat reflective color. This was at a propane fill station in Florida. Anyone else heard of this? Jim

It's from NFPA 58. Most US states have adopted NFPA 58 as the basis for their own state propane code, but not every state uses the same edition of NFPA 58.

Anyway, all recent editions of NFPA 58 state that tanks/cylinders must be painted a heat-reflective color. NFPA 58 doesn't specifically state which colors are heat-reflective and which aren't, so there's a bit of a judgment call involved. Black definitely isn't heat-reflective. Neither is rust brown. As a rule of thumb I'd say if you find a barbecue grill painted in a particular color, you probably shouldn't use that color on your propane cylinders.

I think it would be inappropriate to bake the finish on any propane tank/cylinder that is pressurized and still in normal use. I was told to not bake any finish on either my steel or aluminum dive tanks/cylinders.

Is it Evil to Paint Aluminum Tanks ?

They kinda look like rock guards, but it is actually bed liner. I used it to cover many small dents and abrasions...

I had one place tell me they wouldn't fill the red tanks again after they had just finished filling them the second time....

Imo the red paint does not get as hot in the sun as the bare aluminum... But it isn't my opinion that matters.

It is a urethane paint, cured at room temperature.

Easy to prove.

Fill one of your red-painted cylinders. Fill an otherwise identical unpainted aluminum cylinder. Put a thermometer on each cylinder. Set them side-by-side in the sun and record the temperatures of each cylinder over the course of a bright sunny day, say about once an hour. Make sure neither cylinder is shaded by the other.

Switch the thermometers around and do it again the next day so that each cylinder has been measured by each thermometer.

If your hypothesis is correct and the red cylinder stays cooler than the bare aluminum one, you'll have documented evidence of the fact.

Reputable propane dealers in Texas that follow the Texas Railroad Commission's rules will not fill propane cylinders unless they are white, silver or bare aluminum.

I had a customer that bought one of those red cylinder special Airstreams from ebay. I went to all local propane dealers and none would fill the red cylinders.

Might not be like that everywhere, but I wouldn't want to go through the hassle.

I like shiny aluminum cylinders.

Typically LP tanks are painted with silver paint. Years ago I went to my local Propane gas company and bought silver colored allumi-lead(not positive) but this should answer the question:
"The answer to this question is yes. Can you paint it any color you want? No. NFPA 58 states that propane containers must be painted a heat reflective color. Most state regulatory agencies have their own rule addressing this particular issue but the national code declares that LP Gas containers must be painted a heat reflective color unless installed in an extremely cold environment." The last thing you want to happen is a tank over heating and venting through the pressure relief. Sumptercoatings.com has a few choices.
