Is it Evil to Paint Aluminum Tanks ?

If you look carefully toward the top right in the second picture I posted to this thread you will see my red steel tanks....

I might have polished the aluminum tanks if they were not already painted grey when I got them with my 75.

I don't know, but I think the shape of the Aluminum tanks is just more cool looking than the steel tanks.

And that they last about forever. Plenty of repatriated alum tanks still around in the 1970s with the swastika.

I went to Home depot to look at their propane cylinders, and there it was propane ''tanks'' on the sign. No wonder everyone calls them tanks instead of cylinders.

After painting one tank black I was informed it couldn't be filled because it wasn't a heat reflective color. This was at a propane fill station in Florida. Anyone else heard of this? Jim

It's from NFPA 58. Most US states have adopted NFPA 58 as the basis for their own state propane code, but not every state uses the same edition of NFPA 58.

Anyway, all recent editions of NFPA 58 state that tanks/cylinders must be painted a heat-reflective color. NFPA 58 doesn't specifically state which colors are heat-reflective and which aren't, so there's a bit of a judgment call involved. Black definitely isn't heat-reflective. Neither is rust brown. As a rule of thumb I'd say if you find a barbecue grill painted in a particular color, you probably shouldn't use that color on your propane cylinders.

I think it would be inappropriate to bake the finish on any propane tank/cylinder that is pressurized and still in normal use. I was told to not bake any finish on either my steel or aluminum dive tanks/cylinders.
