I want to make it safe

Hello all, I have a 72 Overlander. I bought it last year and haven't used the propane yet. I got the valves on the 30# tanks updated. Now I need to tackle the regulator and the lines.

I think I'll be okay if I get a regulator for twin tanks with auto switch-over. I've seen some descriptions that say "high-flow" or "low-flow". What do I need?

I also want to replace the lines shown in the picture. I think I can just get (2) 24" pigtail lines for the tank to the regulator. I'm concerned about the third line. Currently is it a mix of copper, and some flexible metal. Can this be changed out with a longer rubber line? What will the fitting size be? Is is a standard size, or will I run into trouble if I order something from a web-site?

And after all that is complete I'll start to test the lines for leaks.

Does anyone use a gas detector inside their camper?

Any other tips/suggestions are helpful.

Thanks,
Nick

To answer 1 question,I don`t like the auto switch,I want to know when the first tank runs out,if you plan on cold weather camper, maybe the auto switch would be good ,just check it to see if it has switched often.Don`t have any of my trailers here right now,so I don`t have the size of the low pressure line,if you take it to an RV store or propane refill store ,I would think they could get you a hose to replace your mess. I have a propane detector, a CO detector and a smoke detector installed inside.

Thanks for the feedback. Can I replace that copper/flexible metal hose with a rubber one? I don't see why not.

Just to show there are two sides to every coin. I like the auto switch. It is just necessary to look at it every day. I like the fact that nothing is interrupted when it switches over.

Regards,
Ken

I am going to jump in withe Ken here. I have always had the auto-switching regulators and they have always worked great.

After a while you get an idea how long a tank lasts and only have to check every few days. With the uninterrupted service, there are no pilots to relight because the propane never went out.

..I like manual switch-over, mostly because one side of mine doesn't work and I can still use the other side! (maybe the autos allow this..I don't know)...

...you definitely want at least a propane & smoke detector inside the cabin, CO/CO2 would be a big plus also, ala Lumatic...

...I don't think the flex hose should be hooked up to the regulator, can't tell from the photo but it looks like that may be hooked up to a tee..??..

...I'd highly advise purchasing a book like either the Woodall's or Trailer Life RV repair & maintenance manuals, both are full of proper procedure and how to be code compliant with your propane/electric, both VERY important for safety...

...if you're not comfortable flaring copper lines, get a plumber etc to do it for you...

The low pressure line is the one from the regulator to the trailer, and is rubber on both my Overlanders, that allows the regulator to move when changing tanks. Dave

They do. They have to work that way or you couldn't unhook a tank to refill it.
