How to flare tubing...

I put together a little tutorial on how to flare tubing. It has been a while since I had to do this (like when I was in the Navy) but like riding a bike it comes back quickly.

I am only posting this on the forum in case somebody does a search one day on how to do it. There is no real need to reply - unless you fing something that I should add or change.

what they didnt teach you in the navy...

when clamping the tube in the block, a nickle makes a perfect "feeler" gauge..

Buttercup---You might want to add instruction on making a Double flare as that makes for a much stronger flare, one that is less likely to split an absolute necessity when flareing steel tubing used on brake lines. ------- Pieman

Double Flare

I love the double flare and it absolutely does a better job. Also the mandrels are sized to help position the tube exactly in the clamp. I wanted to do a double but the local Home Depot didn’t have that kit. They only had the basics. If I do find a mandrel to do the double I can add it no problems. Thanks for the tip.

Also, a nickel is about the right amount to have sticking out of the top of the clamp.

I have a double flare kit. The next one I do, I will take some photos, so you can add them, unless you have it taken care of first.

Thanks Terry. I'll take you up on your offer. I took my pictures sitting down with a beer and a 1 foot section of scrap tubing. I flared several times to show the results.

Yes, if you happen to do a double take pics and send them along. I’ll post with full credit, of course. And if we ever meet it’ll be worth a brewski to you for your efforts!!

One of the more important steps is missing:

Always put the nut on the tube _before_ flaring the end.

It is there

It's there under the "clamp the tube" part, right at the top - it says IMPORTANT NOTE: Perhaps I should make it bolder!!!

Give me 5 minutes....

I am having a heck of a time finding 3/8 lpg tubing. The local guys only have oil tubing. Anyone have an online source?

any good hardware store should have 3/8 copper tubing....or you could go to a hvac supply, but would have to purchase a roll rather then buy by the foot.

Local plumbing supply guy says the stuff for lpg has a different coating inside. Something in the gas corrodes copper without the coating. Nothing's simple anymore.
