Good propane regulator in 2019

What does the collective wisdom of AirForums say is the most reliable brand of propane regulator these days?

I know there was a recall on Sturgis ones a few years ago. Cavagna and Marshall are others I have seen mentioned on the forum.

My 2013 came with a Cavagna. It sometimes would stay on green after performing a changeover. And it made an annoying Bong noise. I replaced it with another Cavagna. Now that one just failed to perform a changeover when a tank ran empty.

I've been carrying around a spare Cavagna, and I just installed it, but now I want to get a spare for next time.

I replaced with Marshall Excelsior on both of my trailers. Exact replacement, no issues.

I an looking at the excelsior too. Did you get the plastic cover? Maybe not needed?

My regulator is under the propane tank cover. It’s original.

The only issue I’ve had is the rubber hose from the regulator to the rest of the trailer propane system got hardened and needed a new one.

The replacement was actually a bit shorter than the original, by about 8 inches, but just happened to be exact right length and had the right flare fitting to hook right up to the quick connect assembly I built and added. I’m putting black corrugated split loom over the hose to keep sunlight off it where it is exposed. Should slow down deterioration from the sun out here.

Serendipity is where you find it. Now I can connect my 3/8 quick connect hose fittings from the Champion Dual fuel inverter generator directly to the Airstream regulator. Tank switching still works so I can easily run both tanks dry without any warning other than running out of hot water midway through DW’s shower. (Wry Grin. Don’t ask how i learned this.)

Sometimes it works out better than planned. I’ll take dumb luck...

I'm not sure what this actually does or if it is needed if you have a cover on the tanks and regulator. The regulator I have now and that I want to replace has that plastic cover.

Also, do any of you know if the existing mounting bracket for the regulator is standard, or do I need to order one of these:

Thanks Robert. That's really helpful. The last piece of the puzzle: I want to replace the pigtails that go from the regulator to the tanks. Would you happen to know the length of those so I get the right size? My AS is 30 miles away from me.

These are what I used when I replaced the reg last year.
They have a braided stainless cover to help deter the critters.👍

My 2017 23FB has 10 inch pigtails. Just measured this past weekend for replacement.

There was a white plastic snap on cover on my Marshall regulator. I re-installed it on the Marshall Excelsior. I think its function is to keep dirt daubers from filling in the vent holes. I've seen some with, some without.
The original regulator for your trailer was a Manchester. You can check this for correctness in your owners manual in the plumbing section.

Length of the pigtails differs with different tank sizes, (20 30 or 40lb) so one trailer can have different from another. IMO, it is better to have a longer pigtail than one that is too short. Extra length does not hurt anything and takes any stress off of the hose.

Many different companies out there manufacture propane products and accessories. However, some make the absolute best regulators, in my opinion. They are Cavagna, Flame King, GASPRO, Mr. Heater, Appizz, Sturgi-Safe, Fairview, Camco, JR Products, Marshall Excelsior, and UFPD.

I have tried many different brands of propane regulators, but these are the only ones that I found to be reliable.

Bob - did you need an adapter with these pigtails? I see there are two different ends and didn’t want to play that find the adapter game. Regards

I have always believed in the Flame King propane regulator. I've been using this for a month or so in a skoolie with a propane fridge, furnace, oven, stove, and water heater. It delivers enough for all of that without issue
