Question gas lines

We just acquired a '68 Overlander and I notice that most if not all of the propane lines run along the outside of the under belly skin. Is this the normal layout? Aside from being crude it appears unsafe.

Normal and safer then running them inthe belly pan. If a leak were to develope then the gas would blow away instead of creating a belly full of gas in the camper that would make a really big boom if it found an ignition source.
