Gas Leak???--help!!

I think we may have a gas leak. The front of our 76' 31ft Sovereign smells strongly of gas. We are running the refrigerator and water heater on it. Does anyone have any suggestions on where we should check first for leaks?

I'm concerned that it may be coming from the stove/oven. I am not where the gas is connected to the oven and I have not used the stove/oven yet.

Are there any other places in the front where we could possibly have a leak? Any suggestions or tips would be helpful...

-Christi

You may have a gas leak. But first check if your bottle is not close to being empty. Sometimes, when one of ours has only 2 or 3 days worth of gas left, the smell is just awful. and it's normal. It's the "stink" they put in there so you can smell the gas.
If your 2nd bottle is full, or nearly full, switch bottles. If the smell disappears, you don't have a leak.

In the mean time, make sure you have all your windows open. And the door.

One place to check....

On my 4 burner stove, there is a shut off valve under the top. (Right Front Corner)This shuts off the main supply to the burner system as well as the pilot. You may want to check for this valve. Others have reported that their cooktops do not have this valve. If it is on and your stove pilot is not lit, this could be where the smell is coming from.

Gas Leak

Christi,

I had a gas leak in my a/s last year, it turn out to be the valve going to the catalitic heater. I was able to find it by getting some soapy water and a brush and just rubbing it on all the valves and connections. If it is leaking it will start to bubble up right away. Hope this helps.

I tried switching to another gas tank...I don't think that was the problem. The smell is still strong.

I will look for the shut off valve. I really hope that it is something simple like that!

I really think the smell is coming from the stove area. Are there any obvious pipes that I should look at?

Thanks so much for all these tips I really appreciate them!

Here is a picture......

of the valve in my stove. There is no thermocouple on the stove pilot, so if it blows out the gas continues to flow.

We had a gas leak caused by shoddy work done by a dealer.
The first place you could start to look would be very tight bends with the lines. That was our problem, after they worked on the water heater. They crushed a line in order to run it at a 90 degree angle.

I agree with MrTimbo your best bet is the soapy water on all connections starting where you suspect the leak and working backwards.
I have the shut off valve but there is also a tee before the shutoff where another line feeds to the furnance.

I would also suggest you turn all power off to the AS, have no pilot light lit, disconnect the battery and leave the door/window open until you resolve the problem.

Gas leak

Follow what the others said, by turning off ALL pilots, turning off the bottles & leave it for a time. Not wanting to scare you, but it's best that you not try to air it out, or cause sparks, etc. The best is to turnoff the bottles & leave it air by itself, as sometimes there is not enough air for combustion & by inducing fresh , welll. Then I would suggest that you call a LP service to have it checked. It's nothing to fool with, if you're not sure.
Best,

Problem Resolved!!!!

Thank you all so much for the advice! It turned out that it was the pilot on the stove. We figured out how to turn it off and the gas smell was completely gone within 30 minutes! I thought that I had checked the pilot...turns out that I just did not know how to turn it off.

If you have the 4 burner Magic Chef unit like the one in my '77 Excella, I'm sure you noticed that the far left knob for the oven has a setting for pilot and off. I looked at it closely before lighting my oven for the first time and figured it was for those who didn't want to re-light each time they used their oven during a campground stay. Glad you found what was going on.

Craig,

That is exactly the oven we have. I thought "off" meant everything was off...my mistake. We lit the pilot and then moved the knobs around until we figured out what made the pilot go out!

Christi,
I've had my trailer for almost 2 years now and it was this past Sept. before I actually used the oven to bake biscuits on the morning before a hunt. I was tickled pink!
