ice

We always drive with it on. As posted earlier in this thread, using a small bag of ice and/or frozen food in the freezer, makes a big difference keeping the refrigerator section at the set temperature. A frozen bottle of drinking water works too.

Putting a bag of ice in the freezer when we first turn the unit on with either gas or electricity helps it cool down fast. Keeping either ice or frozen food in the freezer on the road helps keep the food in the fridge section cool while driving.

(btw many McDonalds will sell a small bag of ice for $1)

Turning on the fan that removes the heat from burner in the outside compartment will help improve refrigerator cooling efficiency (if it isn't already on). Also, adding a little battery operated fan inside the refrigerator will help circulate the air and cool things down, too.

In mid-summer, when temperatures are over 110 degrees here, besides traveling with the refrigerator ON, we freeze water bottles and put them in the door and around food (especially meat) while underway. Then, when the ice thaws, we drink the water and replace the bottles with more frozen ones.
