Exterior LP Port Models 2012 & Newer & How To Avoid Chasing Your Tail

The Airstream Flying Cloud Owners Manual on Page 6-8 talks briefly about the LP exterior port connection, BUT…

After chasing my tail like a puppy for the past two days, I do believe I've found the proper connections for this convenience feature.

Important that folks understand that this is a LOW PRESSURE connection, and as the manual states, the assembly is intended to replace those one pound LPG tanks which you buy at places like Walmart. This connection is for my Weber Q Portable Gas Grill.

The hose should ship with the new trailer, and needs the following parts to complete the connection:

1. A 3/8" FL x 1/4 in MIP Flared Union which can be found at Home Depot.

3/8 in. x 1/4 in. Lead-Free Brass Flare x MIP Half Union-LFA-182 at The Home Depot

2. A Propane Bottle Adaptor / Fitting, 1-20 Male threaded x 1/4" FNPT (female), internal O-ring, NO check valve:

Propane Bottle Adaptor, 1-20 Male x 1/4 FNPT

Hopefully the above will save someone a bit of time and cut down on the frustration factor.

This is on my to do list at Jackson Center. I'm assuming the hose (didn't come with my 2012) is fairly long so you can have the Q away from the trailer, yes?

Hmmm, this has been covered before. My connection is a female quick disconnect and I had to buy a hose with the right male qd. In addition, you cannot just connect this to a bottle adaptor and then your grill. Your Weber grill runs on high pressure propane bottles. You need a low pressure control valve and no regulator on your grill. I do not think Weber makes that but many marine grill makers do.

Apparently, my tail chasing has not ended. I'm not challenging your information, but…

When I called Weber, they said the Weber Q had a LOW pressure regulator.

The parts manager at Colonial Airstream (where I bought my 2013) said they have sold at least thirty connections like this, with NO complaints. Incidentally, the hose came with my trailer, and it's about three feet long.

And your comments are not exclusive; others have said the connection is "iffy".

Now you see why I just can't seem to catch my tail!

We have a 2012 model with the LPG connection in the front and use it for grilling. I have a Weber Q as well. I removed the regulator from the grill and installed the 3/8 flared nipple so I am still able to use the adjustable gas knob on the grill. Our trailer came with the short hose and I went to CW and bought another 3 footer. I had a easy connect interface from a previous trailer we had and mate the two so I can now set the grill on a table on the right side of the trailer near the door.

I wish Airstream was more clear about this for owners. Your grill has a regulator, that means it is set up to run off high pressure propane and the regulator reduces it to low pressure. The little bottle is high pressure.
Your trailer propane is already regulated to low pressure at the tank regulator. The grill just is not going to work properly with two regulators. As above, you need to remove the grill regulator. I cannot speak to how the Q works without its standard regulator but all you want on the grill is a valve to control the amount of propane going to the grill. As I said, I use a marine grill that is designed for low pressure; many boat owner want their grill to use boat low pressure propane.

I, for one, will continue to use my "extend-a-stay" off the high pressure AS tank and keep all my regulators. Seems like a lot less hassle.

Many boaters do the same thing and tap off upstream of the regulator. A very simple solution except when you want to remove the tank. Plus, AS already provided a low pressure tap.

But it is in a bad location and you have to work around all your existing gear. Why didn't they put it curbside and further back. That's where we live.

I am adding a low pressure port to my 2010 and will be using it with my Magma grill. I'll post pics when it's done.

I used to use a high pressure hose. The high pressure systems have a number of drawbacks:

- They will tend to fill with liquid propane, which will cause the regulator to frost up, and which poses both a fire hazard and a frostbite hazard when disconnecting lines.
- In general the placement of the T fitting is problematic. With my trailer, and I imagine most of the newer ones with ACME connections and an aluminum cover over the tanks, it only fits on the curbside tank so you have to physically switch the tanks around if the curbside tank becomes completely empty.
- The front of the trailer is rarely the best place to put the grill
- I find the connections to be inherently leak prone and somewhat difficult to connect and disconnect.

We purchased the Camco Olympian gas grill and so far very pleased. Works with the AS quick connect LP port at the front of the A-frame

I'm just starting to get into this, but I do know that I will need a longer hose from my A-Frame connector to my grill as I want the grill on the curb side. So with that in mind, I'm thinking I will need about 15' - 20' of hose. Does anyone know were I can find such a hose? I looked here in my local shop and it does not look like anyone have anything like this.

As an option does anyone know if I can just go down to my local hydraulic hose supplier and have a hose made up. Would that be safe? I'm assuming they would have the connectors one would need.

After I deal with the hose issue. I'm assuming all I need to do is take the regulator off my grill as it is already low pressure and one cannot have two reg's in the same system (correct?)

Any light shed on this topic would be GREAT

Thanks

Doug

Does anyone know the size of the LPG quick-connect (and low-pressure line from the Airstream's regulator to the quick-connect) referenced above? Is the line and quick-connect 1/4" or 3/8"?

Late model RVs have a Hansen/Sturgis Model 250 Low Pressure Quick Disconnect LP Port which accepts a 1/4" MNPT Plug. Some older RVs had a Model 3/375 Low Pressure Quick Dissconnect Port. The Model 250 Port is a Low Pressure Port (5 psi Max). You will find Model 375 QDs where Grills connect to household Natural Gas sources. The Model 250 QD and Plug look very similar the the High Pressure Sturgis 5LP QD / Plug which is rated at 250 psi. The Model 250 (low pressure) Plug will mate with the 5LP(high pressure) QD but will not pass gas. The 5LP (high pressure) Plug will not physically mate with the Model 250 (low pressure) QD. This confuses a lot of people trying to plumb gas on a RV.

Most hardware stores carry the 5LP high pressure connectors / hoses. RV specific Model 250 or Model 3/375 QD hardware are somewhat harder to find. I found an excellent source for RV QDs and hoses here in Houston.

This is one of the most confusing and useless threads in the forums if someone is attempting to utilize existing equipment off the AS system.

WHICH Houston source did you find? It'd be nice to know your secret source. (wink)

The problem I've run across is that I already own appliances which have regulators and short hoses with POL connections.... but there is no long hoses and fittings mentioned that connect prior to the AS regulator.
Many appliances which have their own regulators are designed to connect (via short hose) directly to the tank POL...and their regulator also controls their flame height. One cannot simply remove the regulator and plug into low press. because there'll be no adjustment left for flame height.
This means to use it I need a highpress hose with a quick connect prior to the AS regulator.... or a "splitter" or "Y" at an existing POL coming off the tank (not a particularly good idea.)

I'd be interested in finding out if this can work on a 2014.

We use the Weber 6' adapter hose that goes directly from our Airstream or smaller portable propane tank (whichever works best at the time). We can also use this hose and small spare tank at home to use our Weber Q1200 there.

My 2017 22FB Sport has a front LPG connection rated at 25,000 btu, according to the sticker on my Airstream right above the connector. My Weber Q1200 is rated at 12,000 btu. Using these numbers it appears that your setup is adequate since the flow from the Airstream LPG connection is twice that required by the Weber grill.
