Empty tank?

Could someone explain how the dual tank and regulator works please? Completed the remodel on our 74 Safari and using lp for hot water. I only turn on one tank with arrow point at and working fine. Sight glass very fogged but do see some red. Do I re direct the arrow to the other tank and disconnect the empty one and refill? Then do the same process, assuming the sight glass turns green? Thanks ahead.

Yup, seem like you have it right. I don't run out and fill the lp tank that day but I would refill the empty tank as soon as possible the when tank 2 reads empty reverse the procedure.

The way it is supposed to work is that you turn on the cylinder valves on both cylinders, and point the arrow at the emptier of the two cylinders. The reg draws gas from that cylinder, mostly, until it gets empty, then starts drawing gas from the other one and throws the red flag.

The red flag won't be clearly visible unless you're actually using propane, so if you check it before a trip, light a burner on the stove or turn on the water heater or something so you get an accurate indication.

Typically you leave the arrow pointing at the empty cylinder until you replace it, because that way you won't get any gas flow from the pigtail when you disconnect it. Modern pigtails have backchecks so it doesn't matter as much any more.

Thanks a bunch. I've been running on one tank most the summer but only using it for hot water a few times. Good to know the gauge is only accurate during use too.
