DIY holding tanks

Holding tanks are expensive. Wondering how many out there have endeavored to make their own. Materials and fabrication equipment are expensive too so maybe that would defeat the purpose of a DIY project. If anyone is aware of a thread here about this topic please direct a link. Feedback and personal experience are appreciated.

Not sure I can help on that - other than reiterate that it is expensive. I got a quote from the Mothership to replace my holding tank covers - as they are rusting out now. Um $400.00 US ouch! I'm going to take measurements and see what my local metal shop can do for me.

Then again I am thinking about ditching the toilet and going with a composting one. So at least the black tank will become obsolete.

For now though I have made new corners out of aluminum and sealed and riveted them on. Painted it with black rock guard and that should do me.

I don't walk around with my head bent over to look underneath - so out of sight out of mind.

I do know that the RV Surplus places can have some pretty reasonable prices for poly holding tanks in all shapes and sizes - you might try there - if your covers are good, and you can do your own plumbing then it could be done for a fairly reasonable price I would think. - Good Luck

The RV surplus place is a good idea, just have to hope there is something that fits your needs in terms of dimensions.

I would imagine someone has made their own holding tanks before. Maybe just to see if they could. Or maybe in an attempt to reduce cost. The process by which this is done would be interesting to read.

Here's a thread from Minnesota which, in part, is about building one's own tanks:

I just purchased holding tanks from Inca Plastics in California. They have a 50 page catalog of all kinds of shapes and sizes of tanks. And they have rubber grommets or spin weld fittings for the connections. The 3" or 1 1/2" (some gray water tanks) drain ports are molded in ready for the appropriate ABS piping.

Cost is about $300 for a tank including shipping. I like polyethylene tanks over the ABS welded ones. But you can fabricate your own tanks at less cost.

youngpeck : Thanks. That thread is exactly what I was looking for. I thought it could be done by a DIYer. I wonder how well those ABS tanks have held up over the years for him. And I wonder if the same process could be used to bend polyethelene for a fresh water tank?

David : Going to check out Inca plastics and their stock. However, if can be a DIY project with custom dimensions for 1/2 the cost, then might be worth a try.
