Date of Manufacture of Propane Tanks
I would appreciate some help as to how one reads the info on the propane tanks so as to determine the date they were manufactured. On the Classic thread, someone noted their tanks were manufactured in 2007 and they had a 2015 Classic.
So, how does one determine the date of manufacture.
Thanks so much....

Manufacture date is usually stamped into cylinder handle.

Here is a photo of a date code, which is stamped on the collar:

To continue the thought, how often do the cylinders have to be re certified and where? Jim

First certification is required 12 years after the manufacture date.
Then re-certification is required every 5 years, for as long as the tank is usable.
add edit:
Most gas companies provide the service. My local provider did mine, that they had filled over the last several years, for free. When I bought used tanks they charged $11 for the inspection plus the cost of the valve, when they installed new valves.

Interesting. Mine have a mfg date, 04 84. But also on the handle is another date 12 13. This date us engraved and is obviously something not original because it has no paint in it. Could this have been done when they were recertified? Jim

Yes, that date is the recert date. I have a bunch of tanks that I refill at the depot. $20 for 20 pounds. When the date has expired I use an Amerigas exchange and get 17 pounds for $20+. And a newer tank date. My dealer says some of the exchange tanks have a special valve so he couldn't refill, but now has made a "key".

Yes, recertification dates or stamped into the Handle.
Call around for the best pricing for the Tank Recert's, cost varies widely.

My tanks, in Canada, require recertification every 10 years. The Propane dealer sends them "off Island" and costs about $75.00 each to be done. I have the aluminum 30 lb tanks and worth getting re done. Mine were man. 2002 and I had redone 12-12.

Yep, Canadian regulations regarding propane differ from those in the US. As far as I know -- correct me if I'm wrong, please! -- at least Canadian regulations consist of a single set of them rather than 50+ different sets of them, as in the US!

There are guidelines, but each state enforces as they interpret them.
