Cost to fill a 30lb LP tank

So what are folks paying to get a 30lb LP tank filled? Around here in Alabama it is $30 which is about twice the value of the propane. This seems a little like gouging to me.

If I remember right about $20, but could be wrong. It depends on where you get the tanks filled. Sometimes campgrounds and gas stations will charge more than bulk propane retailers

Here in Iowa, the $ is $19.95 exchange for the BBQ tank. There is an RV dealer that charges $30.00 to FILL a tank,he does NOT weigh the tank.

See if you can find a place that sells by the gallon. Prices include the filling cost, safety and environmental. Nothing worse than having someone over fill a tank, new tanks have fixed the problem, but it does take an experienced person to do it. Haven't checked recently but the trade in a tank "Blue Rhino" to have a new one full was cheapest a few years ago, but they are 20 pound cylinders.

I haul mine to Flyin' J and they fill by the gallon ($3.09 IIRC), just did 3 tanks on Monday...$74 for 2- 40lbs and a 20 lb for the grill.

Of course my 2nd 20 gallon went empty at 11:52 New Years Eve so now I have to get it refilled...

The average residential propane price fell 1 penny to $2.40 per gallon, ... Wholesale propane prices remained flat, holding at $0.83 per gallon for the week ...

Larry, I think those may be residential propane prices, not small cylinders.

Residential prices reflect larger sales, typically at least 250 gallons, but often much more up here. (Our two front tanks are 1000 and 250 gallons, respectively; the back tank is 500.) When people buy that much in one sitting, they get the residential rate.

Retail sales for very small amounts, typically less than 10 gallons at a time, are significantly higher, just for starters because labor costs become a major factor.

seems to run in the $22 to $28 range for a #30 most places we have been.
One of the disadvantages of getting older is remembering paying $3.00 to fill a 30 pounder

Still better than the alternative, I guess. I remember like it was yesterday Dad giving me 2 bits and sending me on my bicycle for a loaf of bread and a pack of lucky strike. But I can't remember what I did yesterday. Sal

The "blue rhino" tanks are useful if you want to trade in a rusty old BBQ-sized tank, but the "full" ones aren't actually full anymore. Instead of raising the price they charge, they just decreased the amount of propane in the tanks.

Good for a laugh with my morning cup of coffee. Thanks!

I'm not sure this helps with pricing but it just cost me $32.95 to fill one of my 40# tanks. Had it filled at a nearby hardware store in Keller Texas.

They don't fill the tanks because of the possibility of expansion when it gets hot. I believe it is illegal to fill them. I believe they can only fill them to 80 or 85%. That comes out to 7 gal. for a 30 lb. tank.

I have found RV parks that charge for a fill even in the tank isn't empty. I don't fill them there. RV parks generally charge more than at a propane retailer because of the convenience and you usually don't know where to find a retailer. I usually fill them at RV parks because it is a lot easier. I don't go through more than 2 tanks in a year, so it is not a big cost. I have filled them at Flying J's, but it takes 10 or 15 minutes just to get someone to show up and do the job.

I rarely chose an RV park because they have propane, but I'm glad they have when I have one full tank and one empty one and I don't want to look around town for a retailer. But some parks seem to be a bit sloppy about following all the rules to keep us all from blowing up. I haven't noticed Flying J's to be more careful either. If you are worried about explosions, the best place to go is a large retailer because they do follow the rules (and so does Lynn Eubank at his park—he does know the rules and will explain them all to you if you ask).

I haven't seen any reports on the Forum about explosions, but I guess the people who had a problem aren't with us anymore.

That's right in our price range using a gritty local equipment rental business. Closer to $30 at gas stations and U-Haul.

4 year old 40lb Tank over filled

Could a someone over fill a 40 lb tank? Yes: My 40lb'er pressure releif value was releasing fumes the day after he filled my tank. Temp. in the 40's both days. At the recommendation of the retailer that filled the tank, I took it to a Suburban Propane dealer for a possible valve replacment knowing very well that the new style tank couldn't be over filled. Well guess what, it can be and was. Thank God I hadn't openned the tank valve as we were just preparing to leave on an extended trip. So all this great life saving measures taken to save our hide from poorly trained propane dispensers doesn't hold much water. The tank was bled off by the service tech at Suburban Propane and everything was fine. The retailer did weight the tank as he filled it as I watched him but something wasn't right. So future fills will be made at a more experienced location rather than a retailer that rents truck and trailers and sells propane also.

The OPD is supposed to prevent overfilling of the tank. If the tank was overfilled I would question the operation of the valve. A good operator should know when the valve is going to activate based on the weight of the tank and it's contents. If the valve fails to function correctly, it should be replaced.

40# over filled

The valve was checked at the time and was fine. Also the tank has been refilled several times since this incident in Febuary of 2012 and hasn't failed.
