Today, 01/02/13, propane was $2.10 per gallon at the Costco in north Phoenix (19001 N. 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85027-5036, I-17 & Yorkshire).

Well if you get a new bulk storage tank for the house make sure you get a bottom tap valve put in. Roomer has it that you can fill your tanks off your home tank with a liquid line. Of course, this is purely hypothetical and no one would actually do such a thing. Alternatively you could hook your trailer to a spur line off the main tank. Now I just need a propane powered generator and I would be set.

Roomer has it that you have to have a lower pressure in the tank you are trying to transfer fuel to by opening the spit or bleeder valve and it helps if the tank you are transfering the fuel from has been in the sun (warmer) and the one you're putting the fuel into in the shade (cooler). But as you said, this is purely hypothetical and no one would actually try doing such a thing.
Enjoy,

Last summer I filled my 40#ers while camping at the Air Force Academy. They charge $3.45/gal there and I thought that wasn't bad at all. They wouldn't fill because they needed to be re-certified. Off to a distributer nearby who certified them for me and filled them for $3.15/gal. So the $.30 is the convenience factor. Not bad in my opinion.
Here at home they all fill by weight.

Hi DD. Certification is simply a physical inspection. OPD valve = good, no rust on a steel can = good. Paint in good cond. on steel can = good. Aluminum can is just an eyeball inspection. All good = 5 more years.

I agree, I don't think they fill them to 100% capacity. I think it is closer to 75-80% as well. This leaves room for expansion.
Costco will fill them.

They'll also watch for small cracks along the welds. This happens often enough when people tighten down clamps on a steel collar way too much, bending the collar so much that cracks form along the weld.

Costco in Kingston, Ontario charges thirteen dollars and some change. It's the least I have ever seen for a 30-lb tank.

The 80% thing is true of all of these cylinders in the United States.
What trips people up?
1. Believing incorrectly that a 30-pound cylinder can be filled only to 4/5ths of that amount (24 pounds) because of the 80% rule. Nope. The 30-pound figure, which is calculated from the WC marking on the collar, includes the 80%, so when the cylinder is filled to the 80% limit, the propane will weigh in at 30 pounds.
2. Believing incorrectly that the smaller "bbq" cylinders, when bought via propane exchange, contain 15 pounds of propane because of the 80% rule. Nope. They fill to 15 pounds because they can make more money that way. Those cylinders generally have a capacity of 20 pounds, not 15 pounds.

Paid $3.49/gal at a local U-Haul in Sarasota, Fl last week. Filled 15 gallons for two 30 pounders. Even in Florida we need propane for heat.

In west central Wisconsin there is a propane shortage. They will not fill any cylinder under 100 pounds. If your grill is out you are out of luck. Some LP dealers are totaly out of LP. If you want your house 500 gal tank filled, you will only get 200 gallons max, if you are lucky and it's over $5.00 a gallon!!

I got a 30# tank filled for $13.00 on a half off day at Campingworld with the Sams Club membership in October. Here they offer half off twice a week.

I filled one of Lucy's 30# tanks yesterday at U-Haul in Jacksonville, Florida. It was $3.99/gallon. It took 7.2 gallons for $28.73 + $2.87 sales tax. The tank full cost $31.60.

I also read that prices elsewhere have spiked, and that even prices here in the southwest will rise as a result of the shortage elsewhere. I'm hoping we've got enough on hand to make it through the remainder of the winter and spring. It has not been particularly cold here, relatively speaking.
