I'm thinking of converting to a single 30# LP tank, and putting two batteries on the toungue of my 1960 safari. The gas lasts for years without refilling, and there is never enough battery capacity. We don't use much heat here in the San Diego area. I don't like to disturb the vintage look, but it would be more practical. Any thoughts?
Although we live in the cold North, and often camp when temperatures are around freezing, we've made a similar conversion and are very happy with it. Our propane tank is only 20 lbs., but still lasts a long time even when using it for heating. We've mounted a 1 lb. portable propane bottle using a 'steak saver' as an emergency backup, and also found that Trojan 6Volt batteries have the same footprint as the original equipment Group 24 12Volt battery -- what an improvement in capacity. The 6Volt batteries are taller, but were easily accommodated in our setup. Here is a link to a description and some photos, http://www.airforums.com/forums/f448...tml#post454094.

Pauly;
That sounds like a plan to me! I almost always travel with one empty propane tank on the Excella.I have a separate battery for my fridge! 3 total.
BTW-- since when is Oside in the San Diego area??
When I was stationed at Pendleton in the late 60's no one wanted to claim it!!!
I wonder if you could cut the bottom off a tank and stack two batteries in side... The top would go over the top to cover and protect the batteries and have the look of both tanks.... JUST AN IDEA!
I like having 2 propane bottles. When one runs dry while camping it switches over and I fill it after the weekend is over. Most of the places that I camp are miles away from the nearest place to refill. The last time I had a tank run dry was Memorial Day Weekend. We were snowed in at Hawley Lake in Arizona. The closest place to refill was about an hour away if the roads were open. Without a second tank we would have been in serious trouble.
Have you thought about moving the bottles forward enough to mound the two batteries between the tanks and the shell?

I considered this as well.
You would have to make very sure that you couldn't short things out as you installed or un-installed the batteries.
