Considering new Fiberglass Propane Tanks

They're 50% lighter, won't explode and are corrosion proof. Anyone have these yet?

I considered them until I read on the Viking FAQ page that they had to be recertified every 5 years.

According to the US code DOT-SP 12706 the recert is every 10 years.

What is involved with recertifying them? The lower weight and fireproof features are appealing.

Wasn't there a recall on those a few years ago? I'd check that out, otherwise seems like a good idea.

IIRC they can only be filled at certain filling stations which are not readily available. Otherwise great idea!

I fill my own tanks from my house tanks but the recall bothers me. Going to check that out as well

IMO not a good idea as have had tank come loose drag on pavement 2 times, firmly fastened? No covers. One ruined banana wrap. Luckily hose held tank from going under AS. These are 40# aluminum tanks, no damage to them either time except one surface scratches not deep so will easily sand out w/1000 wet or dry sand paper. If fiberglass would they break?

I had the plan to install a larger gas tank. But if the tank is empty, I need to find an LPG filling station to refuel with the trailer somewhere. The gas bottle here I can redeem on any campsite or in a shopping center. You pay once a deposit and then the price of gas for the newly filled bottle.

Greetings from Switzerland - Werner

Werner, how much gas do they put in tanks in Switzerland? In the US the standard propane tank holds 20 lbs.

But if you use the "exchange" program, the 20 lb tank is only filled with 15 lbs of propane.

I'm curious if they do the same short-fill in Switzerland.

For individuals, the amount of gas does not really matter. From 300 kilos (= 661,387 lbs), you need a permit, so for Commercial Transportation. Normal installation in a trailer or in a motorhome = space for 2 x 11 Kg (24.2508 lbs) gas cylinder, inside or outside, you then exchanges the empty to full. In the same size, there are also gas tank bottles (for safety reasons the capacity is only 80%). In my motorhome Renault Master L "Pössl" the tank bottles are filled from the outside. They must refuel itself.
In my Cruiser is a normal 11 kg steel bottle to replace, plus a 20 Kg (44.09246 lbs) Gas tank with outside filling. In my "pictures" is the floor plan with marked gas tanks.

Greetings - Werner

Viking propane cylinders were not affected by the recall. Lite Co of Tn was the culprit.

With OXYGEN, STEEL AND ALUMINUM TANKS are filled to 2200 lbs., the FIBERGLASS TANKS could be filled to 3000 lbs. My concern to the tank would be temperature and solar exposure and "bruising" that could occur from road debris if not protected.
The Vapor pressure in a propane tank is 128 PSIG @ 80 degrees.
