Closing gas line

I removed my wall oven. Today I removed the gas line and capped the fitting under the trailer with a flair nut and yellow gas tape. Anything else to do?

Please do not take offense.

L 911 I don't mean to rag on you in particular but I see this mentioned quite often and I think some clarification needs to be made. When you say yellow tape I assume that you wraped the flare threads with yellow tape and then put the flare nut on and tighten. The threads have no participation in the seal of the joint. The seal is made by keeping the flare of the pipe in compression between the two fittings. Also the flare should be shiny and clean, never use any pipe dope on the flare itself. Well, this is the end of the lecture from the old goat. I hope I interpreted the facts correct from my source which is Copper.org.

Your right. I took the female end I removed to the hardware store matched it to a new flare nut an bought new yellow gas tape. The oven didn't work I found out why when I removed the gas line the line had rubbed a hole in it where it comes through the belly pan.

By flair nut, do you really mean a nut that has a hole in the end of it to allow the gas tube to go through it, or do you mean you bought a solid cap with no hole? Hopefully you installed a cap to replace the flair nut and tube that was connected to the fitting under the trailer. If all you have is a flare nut (with a hole in it), are somehow using the yellow teflon tape to seal the hole in the fitting, and then hold it in place with the flair nut; that will fail and you'll have a gas leak pretty soon.

Shelocta is correct. Just because a fitting has threads is no guarantee that any thread tape or thread sealant should be used. In the case of a flair fitting, NO TAPE should be used as the threads simply pull the flairs together to make the seal. In fact, the presence of any tape or sealing compound is likely to prohibit the flares from total contact, preventing a complete seal of the flare cone and bulb.

Be careful out there!

I bought a brass cap from the local gas supply house it does not have a hole in it. They called it a flare cap and said to use yellow gas tape with it. I took the old part in to match it up.

Why would I have bought a cap with a hole in it.....duh.

Didn't mean to offend, but you were calling it a nut, not a cap. People do weird things all the time simply because they don't know what's correct and not correct, or safe and not safe. Wanted to make sure you were safe.
