My project Argosy is coming to a close and I was missing a few bits, including the LP tanks. I picked up two sets of Worthingtons this weekend...two big ones (10gal), and two small ones (7.1gal). Which ones would you all use? I plan on updating, polishing and selling the remaining set.

Which ones would you rather carry around when they're full? I like my 30 pound tanks and don't think I'd want bigger.

We typically take 2 week long vacations and have 4 kids still at home under 10 years old...does this change the weight vs. useage equation regarding the 30lb/40 lb tanks?

I have the 40-pound Worthington Aluminum LP tanks on my Overlander and am thrilled with them! They permit greater flexibility to shop around for the best price on refills, and most times, I am able to wait to refill until I am in familiar territory. They do not seem to be that much heavier than the 30-pound steel tanks that they replaced. The only down-side is that they are tall enough that they interfere with opening the front window fully . . . moving the LP Tank mount ahead on the hitch would solve the problem on my Overlander, but since I use air conditioning most of the time when I am on the road it hasn't proven to be an inconvenience.
Good luck with your investigation!
Kevin

The 40# tanks when full would weigh about 30 pounds more than the smaller ones. (10 x 2 + estimated 5 pounds extra weight for each tank). That is not much more weight to carry.
I agree with Kevin Allen, the extra capacity gives you more time to find a refill at your convenience and maybe at a lower price.

Weight .... Rule of thumb comparing the weight of full tanks is that aluminum is lighter than the next size smaller steel tank. I have 40# aluminum tanks and find them to be manageable.
Exchange... There are some campgrounds around here that have 20# and 30# steel tank exchange, but not 40#, and not aluminum. So the availability of tank exchange service at campgrounds that don't offer propane fill service might be something to consider.
Use... As a practical matter if you camp 30 days a year or fewer the only way you can use up a pair of 30# tanks is either by running the fridge while storing your trailer or by running the furnace extensively. Or a bonehead move like leaving the water heater on in storage (done that). So the extra capacity will only help you if you run the fridge in storage or camp in cold weather.
Cold... Another fact to consider is that the larger furnaces require enough propane flow that, in really cold weather, you can't use the last of the propane. So if you do any winter camping with temperatures well below freezing you would want the 40# tanks unless you bring a 100#er with you on those trips.

I like the small size LP tanks that are used for gas grills. You can swap them out at any store that has a tank exchange. It's fast and cheap. No need to look for a LP filling station.

My trailer came with twin 30 lb tanks and they work fine for my needs. Mostly weekend trips and maybe gone for a week twice a year. If I were boondocking a lot or full timing I might consider the 40 lb tanks.

You've got to lift them when full, and as I get older I appreciate the 30 lb tanks.

Are the 40 pound aluminum tanks just taller or also larger in diameter than 30 pound steel tanks?

Just taller, same diameter as 20lb and 30lb tanks.

I just had a thought...after polishing them, which I started today. The big tanks will be like a full length mirror, versus the smaller tanks being like a medicine cabinet mirror...hmmmm I could check my campin attire in the big ones. Decisions, decisions.

The photo below show the twin 40-pound Worthingtons on my '64 Overlander shortly after the trailer and tanks were polished by P and S Trailer Service.
Good luck with your decision!
Kevin
P.S.: The tanks were "mirror" polished while the Overlander received and "Original Sheen" polish with Plasticoat.

Wow! That looks great! If you don't mind my asking...what is a reasonable price for the tank polishing? I'm getting a mirror finish to mine, but I'm having trouble on the inside areas near the fill valve. Honestly, with the trailer strip and polish underway, I would just as soon outsource the tank polishing.

I haven't heard anything about what the cost might be for polishing just a pair of LP Tanks. When mine were done, my Overlander was already in the shop for polish and Plasticoat, and the tanks were included as a part of that job. The tanks were new at the time as I was replacing the steel tanks that had been installed on the coach prior to my purchase . . . I don't know whether a professional polisher would attempt polishing tanks that had been filled or had LP in them.
Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin, I've been polishing mine for the last few days assuming they were empty...until I hit the valve and heard the hiss over the buffer. Holy Moley! So, my plan is to have new OPDs put in first, because the tanks will be purged...then resume polishing. Ideally, I will have someone else, a professional, assume the polishing duties if it is not too costly. Thanks for your reply by the way!

Matt if it comes down to what is most convenient stick with the 40's. So then now that that's settled I'll buy your 30's as we are more weekend campers and are looking for some tanks to polish up once I'm done polishing the Safari. Good luck,
Barry & Karen
