65 Overlander Propane tanks
Do we need to replace tank valves from this unit before refilling? This will be my first time with it. Not sure if there are code issues.

The easy way to tell if the tank has been upgraded is to look at the knob on the valve. The converted tanks will have a triangle shaped knob while the non-upgraded will have a round knob.

If you have steel tanks and would like to change to the aluminum tanks, it might be a good time to do that. If you have aluminum tanks and just want new valves, go to the largest gas supplier in the area. They may have the right valves in stock. Many smaller dealers have mistakenly replaced the valves with the valves intended for steel tanks which they have in stock. There are special valves for aluminum tanks, which smaller dealers do not stock.

For steel tanks, they need to be re-certified after 12 years from the original date of manufacture, and every 6 years thereafter. I am not sure about aluminum tanks, I have heard they do not need recertification, but I have not verified this.

To save your old tanks you can buy the new valves install them and then have the tanks inspected. It cost me about $35.00 for the valves and 25.00 for the inspection.
