1990 Excella Atwood 6 gal water heater

Water heater ( pilotless ) produces water 160 deg +. Heater seems to not shut off. Pop off valve seeps if let on long enough. NOT GOOD. Believe thermostat is bad. Have ordered 130 deg thermostat. Hopefully this fixes dangerous condition. Some articles state there are some 160? deg thermostats to better supply warm water without running out, Sounds dangerous to me, especially of kids or grandkids are involved. Bad burn potential. Anyone out there with similar experience?

Yeah. Have had the same experience. I replaced the unit with a new Atwood 6 gallon. I tried replacing the thermostat on the old one but it did not seem to work correctly. The thermostat on the new one is higher than I would like and non adjustable but at least it works. We have a mixing shower head with a limiter on the hot water side to avert scalding that way.
