1987 Argosy 40# Propane tanks

Hello, Getting our 87 Argosy road ready and discovered one of my propane tanks (40#) has to be replaced.

Can I purchase any 40# tank or does it need to be the same kind? Is there any difference in replacing the old tank with a new vertical tank or does it have to be a horizontal tank? Is there a difference?

I have only seen vertical tanks for sale? I am thinking steel vs aluminum?
Thoughts?

Thanks all

Does it need to be replaced or merely recertified?

It is over 20 years old. I did not think you could re-certify it?

My two 30# aluminum tanks were over 20 years old and the local propane company replaced the valves, recertified them and filled them for under 100.00. Steel tanks would have been cheaper due to valves

Recertification is a state controlled affair, so there's really no telling what your particular state does. But in many states, you can recertify any cylinder that meets the standards of recertification, which do not directly include age.

But by direct, I exclude matters like the OPD valves. If your cylinder does not have OPD valves, and they are required in your state (they probably are), you can have the valves replaced.

But, of course, you can just buy new cylinders. There's no such thing as a standard price, so do lots of shopping around, including online. Aluminum tanks are super nice, of course, but they are quite a lot more expensive than steel ones.

Argosy 40# horizontal tanks

I had to replace the 40# horizontal tanks in my 88 argosy 29'
The old tanks can't be filled because of the new (safety) valves and they have changed the valve design on the horizontal tanks so they can't be re-valved like vertical tanks(verified with manuf.). You can find the new tanks on the internet, they are produced by a company in Elkhart, Indiana. Tractor supply co. ordered mine, directly from the manufacturer, had them in 2 days. They were about $150 each (cheaper than on the internet). Good luck finding an alternative, I searched hi&lo trying to avoid the high $ replacement, finally had to "bite-the bullet". The old regulators work, but I had to buy new longer lines because of the different valve placement SC in BC

PS from sc in bc FORGOT TO MENTION --You'll have to modify the tanks a little so the tanks fit under the cover. Had to notch top handle so it would fold down some. If you fit them before filling you could re-weld the handle. I didn't and I think the handle is strong enough .
