100# LP tank

Going up elk hunting & was thinking of taking along a 100# propane tank for additional capacity. Anyone done this? Will be transporting it in the pickup bed but looking for way to strap tank to prevent it falling while in use...any ideas? Will be having a extension lp line made so will need to be 6' from regulator. Any ideas?

Use a ratchet tie w/ two loops in an X over the tank to hold it firmly against the front A-frame.... if your WD hitch rigging prevents the tank from resting evenly against the frame, you can use wood to make a spacer. A 5" wide block of wood with plywood on top and bottom that laps over the frame and has a curved surface for the tank to nestle into would work well.

I am not sure you can legaly do that?

In any case, be very careful...but you may want to check State regs first...hate to have your trip ruined.

A fact to consider is that you can get liquid propane condensing in the line and causing problems if the regulator is below the tank or the line dips down forming a trap. This is particularly a problem if the line is longer because you can get enough liquid propane to frost the regulator.

The shape of the older 100# tanks is such that they will ordinarily remain upright without any support if placed on a reasonably flat and level surface. Some of the newer ones that have a narrow ring on the bottom can use a little support. A chain rope or strap from the top of the tank to the top of your existing tanks should be enough. The tops should be at about the same height if the 100# tank is on the ground and the 20/30/40# tanks are on the tongue.

I thought it was illegal and unsafe to transport a filled 100lb tank on it's side. If the pressure relief seal or the valve was to leak, you would be leaking liquid LP, not vapor. I believe the liquid expands at 144 to 1. (1 cubic inch of liquid expands to 144 cubic inches of ignitable vapor) I think!!

I don't know, but I do know that I transport my LP tanks standing up and strapped to the ladder rack to keep them from moving around.

Well made it back from the hunt and the 100# tank worked flawlessly! Made a stand to secure tank while in use. Matter of fact I didnt need it as I only used 78# during the hunt. Not bad considering the temps were average 20 with nights much colder at 9000 feet.

Had a visitor that also enjoyed the toasty environment, darn mouse ran down my arm while I was sleeping and made my following nights not so peaceful, got home and got the pair of critters with some sticky strips, worked great.....
