I joined, but probably should have known better!

I'm not much into caravans, rallies and such, and prefer the flexibility of just doing our own thing.

I hope I am not anti-social, I do enjoy socialising, but much much more in small numbers than in large groups and in very organised situations!

I thought it might be worthwhile for me to join anyway when we bought the AS, if only for the club magazine - but it was not - I hoped for much more technical info, but the magazine seemed devoted far more to rallies, info on meetings and pictures of people with berets on (Nothing against berets!)

As well, at the time I joined, there seemed an awful lot of stuff going around in terms of internal politics, people threatening to sue others etc., so after two years I decided to just use the $80 a year for other things.

I have heard a lot of good things about WBCCI, and don't doubt at all it is a great organisation for many folk - it just wasn't for me.

As far as the tech info I had hoped to get from the club mag, there is way more right here on this excellent forum with lots of very knowlegeable and helpful contributors!

Sue each other! Wow. I don't currently belong, and I fail to see why I would, given many of the posts on this thread.

How about why I did join?

There is a story about a man sitting on his porch. A car drives up and asks " What type of people live around here? We're looking to move."
The guy asks," What are the people like where you live now?"
"They are not friendly. We don't know our neighbors."
The guy on the porch tells them, " They are the same here." and the car moves on.
Another car stops and asks about the people, they have to move for a better job.
They are asked the same question.
They answer," We know everyone in the neighborhood. We have potluck suppers and we'll miss them."
The guy on the porch tells them," You'll find the people here are just like that."
OK here's why I joined.
When I was looking for an Airstream I had the usual difficulty with Craig's List scams and non-responsive Air Forum Classified listings. I got some good advice from a local AS resource to reach out to the local units and ask if there were any leads on for sale AS from the unit members. I wrote to the President, VP and membership chairman in NC, SC, GA, and VA. for every unit listed on the WBCCI.

Only one unit responded.

I was invited to a rally to chat up the members about AS's in general and network about potential trailers for sale. That gave me great confidence in the unit that responded. It made me wonder why the other units didn't respond.
I did buy a trailer and within 3 hours of picking it up, I was with the unit at a rally. I joined WBCCI between the deposit check and pickup. BECAUSE of the people.
My decision has been reinforced by the people in the unit. They have been supportive and helpful. They have been open to ideas and know how to have a good time.
In the last year, I have been on rallies with members of those non-responsive units. Their attitude towards new and younger ( I am only 4 years retired ) members is less than welcoming. I think that if I had joined any of the other units, I would not be sending in my dues for the second year.
This forum is fantastic but it doesn't beat 4 fellow AS owners crawling over and under your unit when you casually mention a small problem at happy hour. It's really nice to have such a support system.
Maybe I'd have met some of these people on my own. But I doubt I would let any SOB owner crawl around my AS with tools.

The Unit I am with encourages younger members because they realize without younger members the club will die when they do.
We are the youngest members in any RV club we are affiliated with.
We still work.
I'll say 90-95% of RV club members are retired.
We were denied entrance to one club because we aren't retired.

I met a guy on the road that was 33 and retired. I think he had sold a company. He was in an airstream interstate. Would they take him? Not that he'd wanna pay to hang out with a bunch of 70-year olds but I'm curious if it's a work/money thing or an age thing?

Or I wonder what they'd think of me... I'm retired but my wife ain't even close. I bet that would throw em for a loop!

Also what if you retire but then ya have a financial situation and gotta start workin again? Would they throw ya out? Would they stop associating with ya?

These exclusive club type folks fascinate me. I never got it. I rarely need company but, if I do, it ain't hard to find free of charge.

None of that matters.
Everyone is welcome.
I've never heard of anyone being thrown out for any reason.
Working people can't go on caravans, but can attend rallies.

This is exactly the reason we were members for only two years....every one in the chapter we were in were part of "the Good Ole Boy" network that prevailed.
Newcomers were not welcomed and they made it very clear.....Never again, let them stew in their own juice!

You shouldn't let the collective attitude of a single WBCCI Unit color your opinion of the entire club.

As previously stated, I'm on my third Unit right now. The first was a hideous experience, which I will not discuss here on the Forums but might be persuaded to tell around a campfire sometime.

The second Unit was a nice bunch— at least the ones that I met before I joined their Unit— but geographically too far away for me to participate in any of their scheduled events, mainly due to other commitments closer to home that I didn't expect to have when I joined their Unit. Not their fault.

The third Unit looks like it will be a keeper, a good bunch and near enough that I can actually do things with them, in spite of my other commitments.

I've been in WBCCI for 5½ years now (January 2012 to present). I've met a lot of good people. I've met a very— luckily very few— that I wouldn't spit on if they were on fire. WBCCI isn't a single entity, it's people. And like people everywhere, everyone in WBCCI is different and should be judged on their own merits.

Come to a Mississippi Unit rally.
It won't be that way at all.
I am the youngest and one of the few members still working.
Those old folks are awesome.

I for one will give it a try, some of you are wonderful ambassadors for the organization.

What you describe appeals greatly to me, and I have no problem walking away from unpleasantness...

Recommended Units for someone in the Houston Tx vicinity anyone?

Best wishes

We have been members for 4 yrs now. We had been doing our own thing prior for about 8 years then joined due to our interest in the caravans. We've been on several and enjoyed them and plan a couple more. Basically we do our own thing but sometimes our plans cross paths with club activities and we have enjoyed all of these occasions. In fact we just got back this afternoon from one of these opportunities with the unit of friends in Vermont. We enjoy the group from our local unit. It's a nice cross section of ages and personalities. I would suggest to anyone to give it a go. You've got nothing, well almost nothing, to loose and so much to gain.

Look at WBCCI.org for full info, but here's your Houston option:

Texas Coastal Plains Unit (Katy area/west side)

There's a couple others northeast and northwest several hours. The Texas Hill Country Unit is having a rally in Schulenburg in a few weekends, but potentially closing the unit down is on the business meeting agenda... lack of participation from members is the stated reason. We live north of Houston, this was our first year and we're switching units to a Fort Worth unit based on rally activities. As has been said, visit a couple units to see where you fit in, there's a good spot for anyone looking for one!

At about that time there was a bunch of fuss in the forums and in real life about reimbursements for some members to attend rallies, and a couple other perks I could not find listed in the membership manual. Like I said, at that time and in that place, it felt a lot like a pyramid scheme.
You got bad info. There are no secrect events that are not open to all members, though those that are focused around business meetings may not be to everyone's liking. Yes, some officers do receive some travel reimbursement, but it does not cover all of their expenses. The people at the top of the club devote a huge amount of time to the club.

Like everything else, the complainers speak the loudest on-line, while the majority that are having a good time are too busy to post on-line very frequently.

Best to try something out for yourself than make a decision based upon 2nd, 3rd, or 4th hand comments.

I hope you are having a great time no matter how you choose to enjoy your Airstream.
