I still can't find a smidgeon of this information anywhere. I usually read the Beret, mostly in the hope that the new issue might have anything exciting in it.
Your phrase "chose not to respond" puzzles me.

That survey was a couple of pages to be detached and mailed in. Someone who remembers correct me, but I believe it came out in 2004. As a matter of fact there was a Blue Beret issue that dealt with the survey results in a generic fashion. I remember that International is willing to share the results in a paper format if you buy it from them. I sent them an email requesting as to why they couldn't post it on the web site in order to share the results with more people.

My phase "chose not to respond" was exactly that. They asked us to fill out the survey and mail it back to Jackson Center. I assume that those who saw it and didn't return it "chose not to respond". From what I had heard the response was fairly significant, although I don't know the actual numbers.

Jack, come to a WDCU unit rally

Jack,

All we do is sit around a fire, talk, laugh, and watch movies! Very, very, laid back! Heck, one of our members even wears a Wally Byam bandana! Mostly all the illegal WBCCI baseball caps too! Not many berets, although we do have them!

You know, it's funny, I've been following this thread closely. What I've gotten out of it, and I truly mean no disrespect to anyone on this board at all, is that you can tell a person's politics and whether he/she has ever been in the military, just by reading the post.

My opinion is that if you don't like the way the WBCCI is conducting its business, ie wearing the blue beret, or organizing rallies or whatever it is that requires volunteering, and if you don't like the name of the club, then START YOUR OWN CLUB!!!!! This board has over 10,000 members now. Don't you think that there are enough like-minded individuals here to form their own faction/group/club/whatever you want to call it?

Who cares if the club is official or not. What constitutes a club anyway? It's a group of people with like interests getting together to share in each others' lives. Does it really have to be sanctioned by Airstream for you to feel like it's a club? Okay, so you've paid your dues to the WBCCI for the year and you're dissatisfied with it. I'm sure that there are others in your chapter who feel the same way as you do.

The answer is to go renegade. What's to stop you from calling the others and saying, "Hey Bob, I'm thinking of having a weekend gettogether, call some of the others and we'll meet at (you fill in the blank)". What's the WBCCI going to do? Boot you out of their club? Wah, you aren't happy with it anyway, so who gives a hoot? As long as you're with like-minded people, then everything is groovy.

Let those who want to hang on to the nostalgia of yesteryear do so, and stop trying to make them change, because you're unhappy with the way things are. You know the saying: You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I joined WBCCI and VAC when I began to restore/repair vintage Airstreams as a hobby. The hobby turned into a (very) small business and I hoped to advertise in both the Blue Beret and the VAC Newsletter. Turns out that the rates charged would have been more than I could possibly justify and the readership of both publications were NOT anywhere close to my location in Washington state. Then, 6 months after I joined, I began receiving dues notices. Neither club had bothered to mention that dues are due in July no matter what time of year you join. So, for my "investment", I received 6 Blue Berets filled with rally schedules nowhere near here, details of intra-club doings, and two VAC newsletters (which were much more interesting). When I complained to WBCCI about this I received no reply. The president of the VAC responded with a vile email about how they could not possibly be expected to prorate memberships month to month. So, change your name if you wish - but until you get the message of "customer service" you're still in trouble. In our area, we have lots of vintage Airstream owners, many of which are my previous customers, and we try to gather at least once a year for a very informal and fun time. We are trying arrange something for July in the Salem area about the same time as the national rally. If we get it together, we'll let you know where so you vintage owners can come visit. Darol

I have to agree with Darol on this one. When I joined with my 'Free' membership for buying a trailer, it was April, I think. I started gettin renewal notices in July! July! I had only been in the club 3 months, and they were asking me to pony up $70. Well, I refused, I wasn't sure I wanted to spend $70 a year to be in the club. Come November I finally relented and decided to try it for one more year, and again last year. But they almost lost me that first year, just because of a stupid rule about membership dues.

I still don't understand why the free membership with purchase of an Airstream didn't work out. I think that would have been a good way to get people to get their feet wet in the club. As long as there's something in the club to keep them.

I don't think change in the WBCCI is a matter of 'love it or leave it'. That's just un-American (no offence to international members). The club IS the people who are in it, and it should evolve to fit their new needs. I haven't heard any of the long-time members of our unit complaining about the changes. The trick is to make changes that everyone can enjoy.

I guess the point is do we need another one? I consider the Forum a club in its own right. When we get together we are an organization as such. No red coats and no funny hats. Obviously a common symbol to recognize us is really all we need...and we will save that for another thread.

Unfortunately as an organization grows, the more rules they have to make to keep things organized....and folks then lament for the good old days when things were simple.

I asked one of the old timers if the rallys were always like they are today. He said , oh no, we used to go out to a local park and just sit out and build a campfire and the kids played together. We just sort of evolved to where we are today.

The old-timers in my club have said the exact same thing. Now we just want the same sort of rallys they had when they were our age!

Well, I agree with you! However, I believe what has come out in this thread is that WBCCI has decided to change this long-standing name in an effort to attract new members. And, the concensus seems to be that, until the young pups come in, take over, and make some changes, the name change will mean nothing.

I think the Forums are the start of a more loosely-associated club that, when they get together for a rally, are more like the original Wally Byam Club.

Odd

Our dues notices go out in October and you have to re-up by the end of November to have your name in the WBCCI directory and our unit directory. I can't fathom sending out dues notices in July.

Like Forrest Gump said "...and that's all I gotta say about that."

This one has gone round and round and round and round.

If you want my opinion, use the search feature because I don't want to offend the WBCCI faithful on this forum (again) because I like most of the WBCCI folks I've met and spoken with individually on this forum. I just don't agree with the basics of the main orginization.

How's that for being PC.....did someone say Karma?

Twink, I figured you must have been away on vacation! A WBCCI thread just isn't the same without you (it's so much more peaceful JUST KIDDING)
