Rambling Thoughts...

Thank you Bill for the letter in Blue Beret. Danielle and I had discussed writing a similar letter but decided against it since other suggestions we have made to WBCCI were ignored. We're certainly pleased to see your letter was published.

I was surprised to read the letter to the editor a few months ago that contained so much anecdotal information regarding the popularity of motorhomes compared to towable RVs. On our last trip I performed a similar anecdotal count of all vehicles on the road that had integral sleeping quarters or a form of sleeping quarters towed/attached to the vehicle. By counting the number of vehicles with living quarters I surmised that semi-tractors are far and away the most popular means of sleeping in your vehicle while on the road. I want to make an proposal that Airstream should build, or re-brand, a semi-tractor with a sleeper cabin. Based on my anecdotal count the semi-tractor with a sleeper cabin outnumbered ALL RVs (including motorhomes) by a clear margin!

I'm currently reading Portfolio Life by David Corbett and Richard Higgins. While it has nothing to do with Airstreams it has everything to do with learning how to leave your past (career in this case) and move on with new, fulfilling endeavors. Maybe I should purchase 200 or so copies and pass them out at the International this year.

Lucius

I'm glad to hear the Georgia unit voted against the Motor home Amendment. This neutralizes the Washington Unit vote if they vote for the Motor Home Amendment which they may, they have a lot of Motor Home members in their unit. Both Georgia and Washington have the largest membership with over 300 members each. As I have said the Oregon Unit voted 100% NO. As one member said, if this was brought up during the Beatrice years, could you stay a member if you brought a jar of Best foods Mayo.

Also remember, in changes to the Constitution, each NO cancels 2 YES votes.

The GA unit does have a fair number of Motor Home owners as well. There were only two questions from the floor, followed by a unanimous vote AGAINST the amendment. I would also share that we had a lot of members at the meeting. Attendance was well in excess of the required number for a quorum lest anyone think the vote was a product of only a few members. Many of our Motor Home owning members were present as well and included in the unanimous vote AGAINST the amendment.

I really hope this doesn't turn into a play-by-play report on the vote, like the news media do with candidates for public office; "With 8% of the precincts reporting, XX is in the lead with 48% of the vote, followed by…"

Attempts to use the vote tabulation to date in order to influence votes still to come seem unethical to me. I'd rather see everyone vote their conscience, and then tally the votes once at the end, not reporting one Unit at a time. Honestly, the fact that Oregon voted "Yes" and Georgia voted "No" shouldn't have a bearing on what any other Unit decides; all that should matter is what each Unit's members personally feel about the issue.

If the MOHO issue passes you will loose another 1500 to 2000 members. I would be one of them.

Do you see this as an attempt to influence votes? I don't. For one thing, relatively few WBCCI members participate in Airforums.

I like knowing how others are voting.. It certainly won't influence my vote.

I'll take your word for the number of WBCCI members who participate in Airforums. I haven't seen statistics on that.

Correction! I mistakenly indicated the Oregon Unit voting "Yes." In actuality, they voted "No." I should have proofread better; I meant to say Washington, not Oregon. Apologies to the Oregon Unit. And even at that, I should have read better, too; as can be seen below, the reference by Blue Pearl to the Washington Unit was speculative, not a report on an actual vote. What can I say? I'm an idiot.

Nevertheless, my opinion about Unit-by-Unit reporting still stands, despite the flaws in presenting my case. Saying that "one unit's vote offsets another unit's vote"— before the final results are tallied— leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Voting is additive, not subtractive; no one's vote offsets anyone else's.

That is not meant to be a criticism of Blue Pearl; his/her opinion on the MOHO issue is as valid as anyone's. I just don't want to see the results of one Unit's vote swaying any other Unit when they vote.
