There are very few way, other than tracking their IP address, to easily verify whether any poster is who they say they are. In the past, WBCCI leadership was worried that someone would come onto AirForums, impersonate them, and make some bad statements. Thankfully, their worries were unfounded.

I think sometimes we worry too much about the security of information that is readily available anyway.
I would think password protection would be adequate. It is hard to imagination a herd of hackers out there trying to steal our not in public view database any more than they are going to break into my truck just to steal my membership directory laying on the seat.
Escapees has an online membership directory that is an opt in option when you join. It doesn't give you an entire list but you can search by name or member number.
There is only so much you can reasonably do to protect your identity or possessions .

I agree with Rick on this. Password protection with your WBCCI number as a user name would suffice. I had to look up a friends address yesterday, and I was amazed at how quickly I found it on the web. He has been protective of his info, and it was still easily found. user/password will keep those just looking around for stuff out. For a professional, the database at JC is an open book as are most of the other corporations around the world. The truly dedicated have even gotten into the Pentagon and State Department.

well, in a way, its not too much different than mailing out a directory - once it's out, you don't know who maintains custody of it. I could give one of mine to anybody... I could leave it on the table at a resturaunt while out on the road.....
There are ways to reasonably protect and disseminate this info, but there is no way to absolutely protect it.

You can overthink anything. There are no guarantees in life - except death. Just because password protection isn't perfect is no reason to splash everybody's info all over the internet.

Perhaps a password protected download on the website would do the trick... Hmmm - I am thinking about this and will talk with the rest of the ECC members to see if we can put together a solution so that a PDF version or even an ereader (or both) version can be made. Could save the club money in printing costs is a good percentage of the members could get this so I am all for that..... hmmmmm.

If you were responding to my post above - I wasn't suggesting splashing the info all over the place, quite the opposite, I am suggesting that a solution can be made that allows somebody to have it in an electronic form that protects the information from datamining and unintended dissemination as much as can be reasonable expected. Its a matter of how to do it...

I think I know how to do it securely. Have the new user enter their WBCCI number and the email address listed in the directory for that WBCCI number. Then, if the email matches the directory, send a message to that email with a confirmation link. That should do it, reasonably securely.

Actually, I am thinking even simpler - just send it to the members.... Of course, we would have to have a way to eliminate addresses of people who want opt out from being listed in a PDF file. We have the email addresses of over half of the members. Just send them one....

There are some people out there who just for giggles see a site has "protected info" and will attempt to hack it.
On the other hand, i have to agree, no matter how "protective" you are of your personal private info, it is out there and very public. Two clicks and no money passing hands and you can find just about anyone, if you want to pay for it, well look out now they can even get your SS#.
The reason we pay insurance is so we can not worry about having to replace material objects if someone targets us. Now dont get me wrong, we do not splash private information out there, and when we do find our info on the web we request its removal (on google and other sites) our phone number is suppose to be unlisted... yeah, we have found that too.

This argument can go both ways. I like the idea to be able to locate fellow streamers, but there needs to be a way to opt out of it. Someone else on airforums has a google doc of fellow airstreamers that you follow the link to, and can add your own information and then save the list. However, you have to have the site link to get to it so he regulates that.

Buttercup,

I really like the epub format as opposed to a pdf (but that would be better than not having an electroic version). Also, the idea of just emailing it to all who have an email address on file is a good one.

I don't think anyone would object to this. If they don't want the file, they can delete it. As it stands now, there is nothing other than inertia preventing me from scanning the current document on the scanner downstairs, running it through OCR software and formatting it to my personal taste.

Before anyone gets nervous, I think I will go camping instead......
