When people resort to posting videos, things have progressed to gutteral responses. Time for me to unsubscribe.

... right, because no where in the previous 740+ posts has it been taken to a guttural level. I always though Elvis did a super job at summing it all up.

A discussion of the role and meaning of videos in "serious" threads would be an appropriate and uplifting digression at this point. Perhaps something featuring Jim Morrison would be helpful.

Poetry can move the world to great emotion, they say. Jim Morrison was a very deep poet...

2. Current WBCCI non-Class A motorhome members: If the club allows THOR Class A motorhomes to qualify for WBCCI membership, will you remain a member. YES or NO.
I suggest a 3rd question for members:

3. Should the WBCCI allow membership to any recreational vehicle that is not manufactured by Airstream? YES or NO.

Park it under some trees and it might look like this one spied last weekend.

That is the first one I have seen in over 20 years that still had both wings. It had to have had TLC.

Now as for the Triennial attempt to allow non Airstream equipment into the Club for the retention of "Old Friends" that for what ever reason can not or will not own an Airstream product I suggest this. An associate membership be created that carries no voting, parking, or office hold privileges and is available only to members that have maintained a membership in good standings for the previous 5 years.

If retention is the issue, which I doubt sincerely, those effected members would be satisfied. If EGO is the issue, which I believe it is, I say "let them eat cake" and move on.

IRONY, Chutzpah or Both

Got my latest Blue Beret today and skipped to the back inside cover pictures - as usual looking for pretty places to camp.

There "From the Gillette International Rally - Max Doerr, Don Sutton and Leon Foster" - submitted by Faith Simms, #4427

Go look at the picture - they posed as the three monkeys, speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil.

words actually fail me (and that's a first)

At least they will not have any grievances filed against them. Their message matches with Norm's message on the Inside front cover. Let's Ignore the members' different incompatible wants, differing desired benefit packages, differing usages of our trailer, and for some of us, the need to make a living, and personal life styles and therefore they will not exist and we will all live happily ever after. Remember the song "Be Happy, don't Worry".

Beating a Dying Horse?

We really need to add a SAD Wally icon.

Also in the Blue Beret:

I ghoulishly noticed the "In Memorium" for August took half a page - 31 names. One 2 digit number, three 3 digit numbers...

Immediately following that was an article suggesting that grateful members leave endowments to WBCCI. The article started out saying that at the Rayne LA meeting Jim Franklin had challenged other PIPs to make donations to the club to reduce the debt. Jim said he'd match up to $1000 - and had to get out his checkbook. Total collected so far $7690. Way short of a quarter of a million... but maybe a FEW people are starting to feel a few little pricks of conscience (or maybe a few of the little ****** have some feeling left.)

Looked from cover to cover for the "Welcome New Members" - didn't find it.

Also scanned the WBCCI Through the Years article by Joe Peplinski #5533. I quote only the last sentence: "2010: The current directory has 239 pages, the least since 1969."

Under all of the rah-rah and "my way or the highway" attitude... I believe I hear a bugler softly playing Taps somewhere around the next curve. It doesn't make me happy, but I think I'm resigned.

Something that was not noted in the BB was that less than 300 presigned up for next years International. That say not even the Free Loaders sing up in mass.

What is the usual preregistration at the prior International?

If memory serves, about 400 " early workers" and others usually pre-register for the next years International for a couple of weeks free camping. I understand that the "early workers" will only allowed to arrive ONE week early next year. That might be why pre-registrations have dropped.

If they were required to pay for the parking space, the number of volunteers and the cost to the club would drop significantly. I am sure the fairground considers that "free" camping for the early workers as a cost of doing business and reflects it in their proposal. With all the electricity and water already installed at Du Quoin, we should be able to cut the number of prerally workers required. I could not believe it at Gillette, they had 4 parkers jammed in a rental car escorting one or two trailers to their preassigned parking spaces. Then 4 more "workers" came along to inspect for gas leaks. One for each tank, one to write down the results, and another to supervise. Early workers may out number the mere members in DuQuoin.

The reason the cost of renting the grounds is so high is that the owner, private or government, can not schedule a concert for 20,000 people in any of the covered weekends before the Rally.

Think what a fair grounds or stadium is worth for the 4th of July let along the 3 weeks before.

The first Rally I was exposed to was the Princeton International in 63 or 64. They had over 4,000 Airstreams in a farm field each with it's own gofer hole.

Can't you just envision pushing on the slide outs to get an SOB out of the mud while wearing white gloves.

How times have changed.

According to the discussion of the budget for DuQuoin, the fairgrounds charges for each night that a unit is onsite and the fairgrounds will accept the WBCCI count. The budget was based on the number of units on site for each day, a schedule was provided to the IBT during the discussion. At $15 per unit per day the average number of nights is just over 13 for all attendees.

Bill

PS: perhaps this discussion of DuQuoin should be moved to a separate thread.

I started a thread for the WBCCI 2011 International Rally. I hope Bill and Howie will repost their information about budget and preregistration. I'd like to comment further on the budget verses the registration prices and the "official" posted duration of the rally.
