wbcci #967

My parents bought their first Airstream, a 16 ft Bambi, in 1961 and joined the WBCCI. They were assigned #967 and the number was theirs until the mid-nineties when they gave up trailering due to age.

I would love to know whose trailer is sporting the number these days.

I assume it's protocol not to divulge information such as this. However, if that is you and you'd like to PM me, I'd love to hear the story of your getting #967.

Numbers under 1000 are assigned on a limited basis to officers and committee chairs of the club. At this time the 900 series of numbers are not being assigned and looking at the current membership directories, there are no current members with a 9xx number.

Thanks Richard,

Apparently that policy wasn't in effect 60 years ago. While I don't have an Airstream now, I hope it's just a matter of time... guess there's no going for the number if/when I do... maybe I can get it as the license plate number.

I appreciate the information.

Or see if you can get it with a leading digit and space it out a bit further?

I have seen several creative things done with numbers. As stated earlier, you could go for a number such as 9672 and place a dash or just space the 2 away from the 967. That way you could be the second 967. It sould make a great conversation starter.

Thanks for the ideas. I'd never have thought to get creative with the placement/spacing of numbers... when I was Airstreaming with the folks you never saw creativity with the number placement or punctuation.

The other idea I had was registering a unit with Airstream and naming it #967. I suspect that would be available, I doubt many people name their trailer a number. This way I'd get the nameplate with the number on it.

Of course, first things first, I need to pull the trigger on getting a unit to number.

Try explaining the family connection to the number. Since they are not using 900 series maybe, who knows

Hi Dirtbeard,
WBCCI #967 was assigned to your parents in the 1962 thru 1998 WBCCI Directories. They were listed in the 1960 Directory, but without a WBCCI membership number. Directories were published at the end of the year thru 1960 and then at the beginning of the year for 1962+, so there was no 1961 Directory. #967 was unassigned in 1959 and has been unassigned since 1999. What this tells us is that your parents joined the club, most likely in very late 1960, which could be appropriate for a 1961 Bambi which began production in late 1960, but they weren't assigned a membership number until 1961. In the early years only members that went on a caravan got numbers, but by the early 1960s numbers were assigned to all members. You parents eventually went on some caravans starting with Airstream Company Caravans to Eastern Canada in 1978 and Mexico in 1979 and eventually continuing with several WBCCI caravans in the years that followed.

Regarding #967, most of the rest of what people have posted is correct. Since about 1970, numbers below 1000 have been reserved for special usages (club officers, etc.) and thus cannot be reassigned to the general membership. Currently the numbers 900-1000 are reserved for future usage, though 899 and below do have defined purposes. There is no way for you to be assigned your parents #967 without this going to a vote of the clubs International Board of Trustees. While not impossible, it would take a compelling case to make this happen. Choosing a number than incorporates 967 would be easier. We have one current member that has 16921 that incorporates the parents number 692 between two 1s. Others have suggested different possibilities. Good luck!

Thanks Joe... maybe if I showed up with a picture of four-year-old me at a rally standing in front of #967 (with a little blue beret) they'd... on the other hand, probably not - and there are other options.

I remember dad saying he requested a low number when they joined. 1978 was also the year they retired and started using #976 to it's full extent.
